About Bill

Who I am, at my core, is a teacher. I am willing to train myself in the 'best of breed' methods that apply to any area of tutoring. It is a joy to know that I am being a contribution to students, families, communities and the world. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity.

Because of this commitment I have learned to work with Elementary school students, I have studied Study Skills and Reading. My history has trained me in Public Speaking, Time Management, and Project Management. My interests and reading have made me more than literate in Social Studies, History and Government

I'm the Math teacher you always wanted to have. My degree is a Bachelors of Secondary Education and I have been certified to teach Mathematics. I have successfully taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Physical Science, and Physics. I have tutored students from middle school to what young adults would consider old age. Subjects would include all of the above and Chemistry, GED math, College Algebra, and Statistics. In addition I have tutored for the math sections of the General Contractors exam, Teacher Certification exam, Water Distribution certification exam, and ASVAB. I get back to what makes sense to a student and then build from there. I do all of this with a sense of humor and a smile!

Slow down, it really is easy. I learned my trade as a high school math and science teacher. This is where I took on explaining a concept in a way that the student understands as opposed to merely expecting a student to understand what I said. After leaving teaching I had lives with IBM, computer consulting, business management, and restaurant and event management. I have met many different and interesting people. I can't wait to meet you.

In addition to 'traditional' tutoring I have engaged students at a distance over the internet. Although I have always known that understanding and speaking the language of mathematics is critical to success this experience demanded that I find new ways to ensure student and tutor are both talking about the same thing. It was quite a challenge. One I met head on with great success.

Thank you for the kind words. I want you to know that I had a notebook that included worksheets to practice number line operations, fractions, basic equation solving and basic word problems that I intended to bring to our session that was cancelled. Patrick was listened to and I had identified problem areas. I wish you both the best. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have both tutored individuals and been a classroom teacher for Algebra. It is a favorite subject of mine as I know that it forms the basis of all more advanced work. Having fun and using real world examples are just a couple of my strengths when tutoring this subject.

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra II in both the classroom as well as tutoring privately. The subject is a challenge for many students because of a lack of understanding of the Algebra I subject matter. We have fun and learn at the same time.

In addition I have vast and successful experience tutoring college level Algebra students.

ASVAB

I have tutored, both in person and online, in a number of subject areas. My strong suit is math but I have covered the full range of subjects included on the ASVAB exam. Most people that need help with the exam are either very good in some areas and not so strong in others or have 'test anxiety.' We will work on both.

Career Development

My knowledge of Career Development is self taught and experiential. My education career started with positions as a junior varsity high-school football and middle-school basketball coach. Within 7 years, I was teaching Physics and Algebra II and I was a high-school defensive coordinator with an offer of a head coaching job. Instead, I went to work for IBM as a software troubleshooter with no experience. In 12 years, I was recognized as an expert in the products I supported and had become a valuable marketing resource. I then transitioned those skills into the outdoor amusement business as a general manager. Career development is one of the things I do best.

Cooking

I have been involved in starting two restaurants. They both featured made from scratch dishes. Menus included traditional and vegan entrees. I love to create in the kitchen and you can too.

COOP/HSPT

COOP/HSPT test performance is much the same as any other standardized testing. I have studied this particular test and understand the material tested on and the WIDE variety of subjects covered. Previous successful experience has prepared me to assist current students.

Football

I have coached football for over 7 years. That includes time as a head coach, defensive coordinator and position coach for all positions. I was an All State football player and am a member of my High School's Athletic Hall of Fame.

GED

I have experience preparing students for the GED. I request that we find a location that is free of distractions so we can focus. I will stick with it and find a way to explain so that a students understands why not just how!!

Although my training is in Math i am competent discussing other subjects as well.

Geometry

I was truly lucky to have a teacher who made Geometry real, I now do that for my students. My experience includes both classroom teaching and tutoring. I work hard to have fun as we discuss what we are working on.

Physical Science

As a math guy, science has always been a big draw for me, especially the physical sciences. It is such a clear look at the relationships between the forces at work in our world. An adventure in exploration!!

Praxis

As a teacher I assisted coworkers who were using the Praxis exam to add mathematics to the list of subjects they could teach. Our approach will start with a Study Companion and use it as our base for planning a strategy to be successful on the test. Much of the training will be crossover from other test taking skills I have developed.

Prealgebra

What a great subject!! The basis for years to come. I am experienced teaching this subject both in a classroom and 1 to 1 and have excellent skills explaining the subject in terms a student 'gets'.

Precalculus

I have experience teaching Precalculus as both a classroom teacher and a tutor. I find that it is a critical point for most students looking for more advanced studies. We approach the subjects with both fun and rigor.

I have also tutored college students who are preparing to take Calculus.

Probability

Probability is such a neat subject. How many times does someone say 'what are the chances...'? Well this is how you know, for real, what the chances are. In addition the understanding of odds puts a bright light on betting and understanding how that works. It doesn't matter that you don't bet it's fun and interesting to know how odds are calculated.

PSAT

PSAT testing is a great 'dry run' for the SAT. We will work on not only content area but also the strategies for success. A large part of doing well on this kind of test is knowing how to get to the correct answer quickly. Adding that to your skill set could be crucial.

Statistics

The majority of my statistics education is self taught. I have experience tutoring both AP level and college (up to sophomore) level students. I have created study aids to solidify concepts for these students. We are though and always have a good time.

Study Skills

I learned study skills over time from experience as a student, teacher and business professional. I enhanced these skills by taking and teaching classes on the subject. Tutoring in this area is a logical extension of this work. I find it very gratifying to be a part of a student's continued success.

Trigonometry

Sometimes when you are studying Trig you wonder, "How did someone come up with this?" Well that's part of the joy of the subject. Although I have been very successful tutoring trig I felt a need to refresh the concepts in my mind. So I enrolled in, and completed, a review.

Wonderful tutor -- Couldn't be happier! — My son is an Algebra 2 Honors student in the 10th grade. He needed some extra one-on-one practice and we found Bill through WyzAnt. Bill and my son continue to meet regularly. Because my son enjoys working with Bill so much, he recommended Bill to a classmate in need all on his own! We are very pleased with Bill, as he is flexible and goes above and beyond, even sending home extra practice whe ...
