I have been tutoring for over 16 years, as my principle occupation for the past 8, and have seen over 100 students respond to individualized explanation. I tutor students from the kindergarten through college level in subjects ranging from Pre-calculus to Writing to History. I connect with those who struggle with learning difficulties as well as those working well above grade level and those working toward ambitious goals.
I believe that helping a student must involve understanding "not getting it." Therefore, I make it my priority to figure out how a student is thinking about a particular concept and how best to meet him or her there so that we can then work toward the correct thinking process together. When it comes to a skill, I like to start as basic as possible, then move on to more complex examples, and, finally, teach how to recognize and apply the skill in context. I believe this last step is important and often glossed-over in textbooks but crucial for tests. For some students, the material needs to be broken down as much as possible. I usually focus on skills first and correct vocab and terminology later, especially when it comes to math. I am passionate about integrated learning and when tutoring a student in multiple subjects or SAT/ACT prep, encourage them to draw connections wherever possible.
I am dedicated to being individualized and my greatest asset as a tutor is an ability to adapt to different thinking styles and situations, often on the spur of the moment. Each of my tutees have learned to trust that I will come up with a way to explain the material in a way he or she can understand. One of the great things about being a long-term, full-time tutor is getting to absorb through my students a huge variety of well-honed teaching tactics from a range of schools and teachers. This lets me bring the best of the best to each session and gives me a deep well of things to try, as well as insight into what might work for particular students. I had Kathryn help me on my College Algebra after my first test in class was a big failure.
I had hired several tutors before her but most of them had no clue on what to do or how to teach.
Kathryn jumped right to to the point without wasting my time. I worked with her until the end of the semester and I ended up passing the class
with an A. She was always very knowledgeable on the college algebra homework, quizzes and tests. One of the most appreciated tools that she offered was that I could contact her by email or text if I got stuck on my homework.
Thank you Kathryn for helping me not just pass the class, but also helping me to get an A.
She is an A+ tutor.
Kathryn always does a wonderful job at breaking down the math and making it easier for my kid to understand the steps
Kathryn did a wonderful job helping organize the workload for the week. It's especially helpful that she breaks the reading assignments down, coaches on ways to take notes and practice for group discussions in class. These are such valuable tools my daughter will be able to apply to all future classes.
Kathryn seems to have a good understanding of my son's strength and weaknesses. She is able to adjust her sessions to play on his strength yet she is firm when holding him responsible for his study habits. He gets frustrated but is showing progress.
Kathryn was able to help my son comprehend his Algebra 2 homework in ways his high school teacher cannot. This is boosting his confidence and we are grateful for this.
Kathryn has been a blessing for me. I was retaking the GRE and had only two months or less to prepare for the exam. Kathryn responded right away to my request and set up times for tutoring at my convenience. She was extremely patient and worked with me in many diverse concepts to where I felt comfortable about math more so than I ever had in my entire life. She was always available through text or call and prepared homework and other resources to further strengthen my skills. She is very knowledgeable and taught me skills that would help me answer the questions and work through the problem faster to allow more time for the harder GRE questions. My score significantly increased and now I am competitive for the PhD programs that I am applying to around the country. Thank you so much Kathryn for all your patience, help, and hard work. You made me feel so much more prepared and comfortable during the test! I have already recommended her to other students like me and I would use her tutoring again in a heartbeat!
Kathryn spotted what my daughter needed help on from weeks ago that was hindering her understanding the most current assignments. And did so "without making me feel stupid" my daughter said.
Kathryn was fantastic. Anna was so comfortable and said that Kathryn really explained the lessons very thoroughly. She was patient and very knowledgeable. This is exactly what Anna needed!
Kathryn is helping with SAT and ACT materials before the fall when my son must take the SAT for the first time.
Kathryn has made enormous strides with my son Steven. She is available and always on time. Email seems to be the best line of communication with her.
Kathryn communicates effectively with all 3 of my teens. She is detailed, patient and willing to approach varying academic requests with determination.
Kathryn is an amazing teacher! We had the privilege of meeting her when my daughter (who just finished her junior year in high school) was on the verge of failing her Algebra 2 class. She was having trouble understanding her teacher, and her style of teaching was interfering with her doing well in class. Kathryn was able to explain this subject much better to our daughter. Kathryn has a calming, thorough, and effective way of teaching. Kathryn is now helping her with her ACT. I have no doubt she will do well.
Kathryn has provided strong strategic concepts to tackle complex GRE problems during our tutoring sessions. She makes concise suggestions on how to improve and stays intently focused, which makes learning new concepts easy. She has my strongest endorsement for tutoring.
Kathryn does a fantastic job at explaining the math in terms that makes it easy for the student to understand. She has been invaluable and we highly recommend her for tutoring. She is great at explaining the material and giving them notes that continues to help them work through the problem solving on their own.
Kathryn responded quickly when I was seeking a tutor for the GRE. She gave me some information about her teaching style before we met and asked me questions about what my goals were and exactly what I needed. She was very flexible about where to meet and always got right down to tutoring me. She was patient with me and very respectful. I would recommend Kathryn, highly, for any tutoring needs for any age.
They covered a lot of material tonight since my student will be taking the EOC next week. She is feeling a bit more confident with the material. Kathryn has also been reviewing some test taking strategies that we hope will help with the exam.
Kathryn is as sharp as a tack. She is an excellent tutor who is so helpful at providing thoughtful feedback and, most importantly, making sense of the issue at hand. In my case, Kathryn tutored me in precalculus, addressing each step with clarity and giving me tips and tricks to quicken my pace. During the tutoring session, she would create understandable notes for me to take home so I could review and use them as a guide. Furthermore, she is professional, reliable and by far the best tutor I've ever had. Kathryn has my highest recommendation!
Kathryn began tutoring my son when he began struggling in Pre-Calculus. With her guidance, he was able to move his grade up to a B+/A- on a very difficult midterm. She was extremely knowledgeable on the subject area, but also had a good approach to teaching him. She was extremely prepared for each session, and gave him efficient guidance on how to approach problems as well as understanding of the broader concepts related to the problems. She provided feedback via email of each session on what had been accomplished as well as what he had to focus on; this helped structure what he needed to do before the next session. Best tutor we have ever had! Would highly recommend Kathryn!
When I was able to sit down and talk to Kathryn about my math struggles she was patient with me and knew how to help in what areas I was struggling in. I will be using her services in the up and coming months of math and chemistry.
I am so glad we chose Kathryn as a tutor for my son. He needed help on increasing his test scores on the SAT and he had limited time before test day. Kathryn was very accommodating and easy to reach for setting up dates/times to get in sessions. She was always friendly and pleasant but got right to the lessons. My son felt the time he spent in the sessions was very helpful to him. She had many tips, advice, and strategies to help him with his particular needs. She had a plan for each session and also assigned him work to do between sessions. I felt her tutoring was very valuable to helping my son with his Sat test and would not hesitate to recommend Kathryn for other students needing assistance.
Kathryn was instrumental in improving our daughter's Algebra grade. She filled in the gaps that were missing from previous years. While our daughter worked diligently to make a B in math, she was always feeling behind. Kathryn was wonderful about going over new material and providing support and a more solid foundation for the older material that was not thoroughly grasped by our daughter. Next year she will be taking an AP math class, thanks to Kathryn!
My 16-year-old nephew was having a terrible time in math until we found Kathryn W. at Wyzant. He describes her as "funny," and a tutor who "really breaks down the material," and "does extra steps to help me figure things out." He also says she's been very generous in helping him with his other subjects -- English, History, Biology and Driver's Ed -- even though her expertise is in Math. He says she's "one of the best tutors/teachers I've had in a long while, and she is there when I need her."
My nephew went from failing Algebra to a strong B (and it would be higher if he didn't occasionally forget to turn in his homework) and is often called upon by the teacher to help explain things to other students. Kathryn is an exceptional tutor in that she does not let her pupil get around doing the work -- before she lets my nephew progress, he has to demonstrate a firm grasp of the material in multiple ways. She is patient and helpful and very good at getting an unmotivated student interested in learning. She doesn't enable my nephew by making it easy for him -- instead she challenges him in helpful and well-informed ways. She is also very committed to her students -- Kathryn has gone so far as to help my nephew remember things by setting up alarms in his phone, and she checks his grades online and follows up with him to make sure he's staying up to date on homework. Kathryn really cares about her pupils and she has made a real difference in my nephew's life. He was a kid who didn't like math and didn't think he could "get it." Now he's a student who is confidently headed into Geometry and, in his own words, "looks forward to working with Kathryn again next year."
Very patient, attentive, helpful. Excellent content knowledge and explains concepts clearly. She has been able to work with my child to develop a foundation in math which was sorely missing from her middle school teachers.
She has kept our daughter from drowning in higher level math in high school. At last, she made an A on her pre-cal exam.
The session went very well. Kathryn was VERY helpful and explained things very clearly. We plan to use her on a regular basis.
Kathryn has been very patient with my 17 year old daughter and works very well with her Florida virtual School math class.
Kathryn has been a great help to strengthen my weaknesses and develop skills that were totally hidden. Also accommodating to my difficult schedule. I have observed significant improvement in my math and thought process skills since I started working with Kathryn.
Kathryn tutors my high school daughters in math; Honors Algebra, Geometry and Trig. She is extremely patient, very knowledgeable and has a way of explaining math concepts in everyday language so that my daughters can easily understand! Often times I hear the girls say, "Oh, now I get it." She does a great job of asking them questions to make sure they are truly understanding the materials. Both of my daughters say that she is the best math teacher they ever had. Kathryn is very dependable, easily reached by email or phone and is always prompt for the tutoring sessions. I highly recommend her; she is awesome!
Kathryn worked with my daughter while she was taking Algebra 2 through Florida Virtual School. She immediately identified my child's learning style and the issues she was having with the online format. She bolstered my child's confidence while teaching her both the subject matter and strategies for studying and testing well. With Kathryn's tutoring and support, my child completed the entire second semester of Algebra 2 in about half the time it was projected to take, and earned an A in the course.
Kathryn has tutored my 5 year old daughter for three sessions and a transformation is already happening. I believe this can be attributed to Kathryn's calm and patient yet very focused approach. My daughter is a very high energy girl and it is not easy to always pinpoint what is going on with her, but Kathryn has managed to quickly gain her trust and interest. We've changed direction a few times in the lessons and even had to change location 1 time and Kathryn did not miss a beat. Her adaptability and willingness to adjust show a great talent in tutoring and are keys to the success we're already seeing. Kathryn has used a very positive style with my daughter and has essentially customized each session to bring out her strengths to help her learn while actually enjoying it.
Thank you very much for helping Katie develop her reading skills at such an important time in her education!
Kathryn has been so dedicated to helping Tori with Pre Algebra. She works very hard and stays on task until Tori grasps the concepts. She has been a motivator, encourager and cheerleader for Tori. As Tori has said, she really cares. She has also helped Tori with some study habits in other subjects.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked tutoring students in both math and reading under the No Child Left Behind act. This involved working with curricula from Kindergarden through Sixth grade in both individual and group environments. I have also created and implemented a year long extracurricular reading plan for a seven year old boy and created a French curriculum for a K-2 after-school French class for about 15 students. In addition, I have privately tutored elementary students in a range of subjects including reading, math, science, and social studies.
Extensive experience tutoring for the GRE
Familiarity with the test material and the conceptual approaches it wants
Perfect personal score on the Math section and near perfect on the Verbal
I have successfully worked with several students at the elementary and junior high level to improve their study skills and organization for all subjects. I have years of experience identifying learning styles and creating adaptive techniques that demonstrate how to make studying more efficient and fun. For this to be successful, I develop a sense of trust with the student and help him or her see that better studying leads to more time enjoying the things that he or she likes to do. I also make sure that I provide them with a range of options for studying so they have a "tool box" they can pick from. Having these choices lets them become less reliant and more independent learners. It also relieves frustration because the student has a back up when the proscribed method isn't working. In addition, I include the parents because it is important for parents to be aware of these methods and styles and the ways in which their kids learn.
