Konnichi wa! I have taught Japanese for over 20 years and have taught kids from 4 to 84 years old! I have taught at pre schools, grade schools, jr and senior high schools, colleges, universities and senior centers. The word most people use to describe studying Japanese with me is "Fun!" Students are often surprised that learning Japanese with me is much easier and way more fun than they thought it would be. I am an effective teacher and look forward to helping you learn Japanese.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL since 1981. I have the most experience with teaching Japanese people (having worked extensively with families in Missouri, as well as children and adults while living in Japan), but have taught people from all parts of the world.

I teach a foreign language (Japanese) and love to learn new languages, so I understand the challenges of learning a different language first-hand.

I have successfully tutored business people to help them improve their English in their jobs.

Japanese

I have been teaching Japanese since 1988, beginning as a TA during my graduate studies. I have taught at elementary schools, jr and senior high schools, colleges, universities, and senior centers. I have had special training throughout my career in the direct method (using no or little English), acquisition based learning (also called the communicative approach), and TPR and TPR story-telling methods (Total physical response).

I tailor my teaching method to the needs and desires of each individual student.

I have lived in Japan on several different occasions and am comfortable with the natural speech of contemporary Japan.

I love manga, anime, J-drama and J-pop and use them often in my lessons.

Great Tutor — Cathie is an excellent teacher. She does a great job with word association to help you memorize the Japanese phrases and words. I find her to be very responsive, patient and an overall good instructor. I highly recommend her. ...
