This is my 18th year of teaching. I am certified by the Missouri Department of Education to teach science and math, grades 6-12 and have passed the required background check from the state. My tutoring experience includes working with students in geometry, algebra, ACT preparation (all subjects), physics, chemistry, biology, algebra 1 & 2, and trigonometry. I have taken ACT classes to learn how to better prepare students for the ACT. I currently teach middle school science in a St. Louis County district and hold my certification to teach from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. I have 35+ hours in education technology and advanced science coursework (Vanderbilt University) and a Master's in Business Administration (SIU-E). My Bachelor of Science degree is from Missouri S&T.
What I enjoy most about working with students is how I can differentiate to make the tutoring work best for the individual. Tutoring really involves listening to the student explain his/her needs and then tailoring the sessions to these needs. I love getting feedback from my students because I am a student myself and know that the learning process is continual. My eighteen years of experience makes me an exceptional tutor as I can draw from many resources to present the content. I am patient and know how to make a lesson relevant. I was selected as Teacher of the Year at my current school in 2003-2004.
Science and math are never boring to me! I believe that mindset comes across in my tutoring sessions. Plus my years of experience help me better tailor the content to the student's interests and needs. I love working with students of all ages and especially with students who are looking for someone who is patient and has lots of experience. I cannot say with certainty what approach I will use as a tutor as that depends on the student. Finding out if I am a tutor that's right for you will be the most important goal of our first meeting. I will not charge you for the first meeting if you decide that I am not the right tutor for you. Please message me with any questions you may have. This is my 18th year of teaching. She and I worked together for my Chemistry course, and my Organic Chemistry course last year, and it helped so much, so I knew I had to request her again for Biology. We had two sessions on different days and worked on a college level Biology course. She helped me to prepare for an exam by going through an old exam that my professor gave my class. She was great at explaining why specific answers are right, and why the other ones are wrong. She helped me to better understand what problems are asking me on the practice exam and helped me to eliminate wrong answers. She also helped me with complicated Biology vocabulary terms. She was very accommodating to my learning styles, and used many different graphics to help explain things to me. Would recommend for anyone!!
Patty is a very patient and knowledgeable tutor. She is working with my son on preparing for ACT. He already shows a lot of improvement and got a better score on the last ACT test.
My daughter has been struggling in physics and feeling defeated. Patty has taken her where she is and building upon it at a rate my daughter can comprehend. Patty is providing visual learning to help my daughter understand and remember.
Patty is teaching all four areas for the ACT test. Very knowledgeable and patient with her student. Gives great examples for preparing for the test. There has been four sessions so far and I feel that this will be a great asset for my son to succeed with the test.
Patty was very helpful in helping our son review and better understand skills he needed to pass for chemistry class
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
