My name is Engela, and I am originally from Namibia (Africa). I look forward to assisting you in making English fun, relevant and comprehensible. Here is little bit about me:
I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree (1997) and Master of Arts in English from Wayne State University (2000). Currently, I am in pursuit of a second Master’s in Teaching Secondary Education (MAT) at Wayne State University. Prior to that, I tutored both native and immigrant students in ESL for about 10 years. In addition, I am an online instructor, teaching part-time Effective Expository Writing and Contemporary Business Writing for Axia College, an extension of the University of Phoenix. I also work part-time as Coordinator of Systemic Investigations and Testing at the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
I believe that my international background, coupled with my extensive teaching experience and qualifications, will be beneficial in making reading and writing fun and relevant. I had to acquire English as a second language, so I can genuinely relate to my students’ frustrations in their efforts to express themselves clearly, both verbally and in writing.
Although I enjoy teaching online, I find it much more gratifying working directly with students one-on-one or in a classroom setting. My comprehensive knowledge of English will serve as foundation for effective teaching and learning. As your tutor, I will integrate effective and flexible teaching strategies that are crucial in cultivating learning in a nurturing, student-centered environment. Of course, this includes the ability to design, reevaluate and revise lessons to maintain relevancy and to meet your needs.
Above all, teaching is my passion, and student success is my reward. I have high expectations of my students and believe that each student can learn at his or her own pace. Teaching and learning are reciprocal; so I, too, would learn from you. As a reflective practitioner, I am very flexible and routinely observe and assess my students’ scholastic progress and overall performance so I can redesign lessons if needed.
It is critical to recognize and incorporate students’ diverse cultural experiences, varying intellectual abilities and different perspectives into their lesson plans, especially in terms of lesson design and presentation. It is my job, as an empathetic and engaging tutor, to create a nurturing, inclusive and student-centered learning environment-- so welcome aboard our educational journey!
