Though I have always been intelligent, in high school I remember how hard I struggled to pass - which now I just know I was doing everything wrong! After being in college for 6 years (majoring and excelling in Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Pharmacy, and Chemistry), I have gained a vast amount of knowledge and experience that I LOVE sharing with people!
I started tutoring my freshman year of college, unofficially, here and there - mostly to people I met or was friends with. Then I got a job with a very small tutoring company in Monroe, LA during my Junior year in college. While working for that company, my primary subjects I tutored in were math and chemistry for high school students. In the most recent years I have done odd jobs here and there, helping people in subjects such as ACT prep, college-level Calculus I & II, Organic Chemistry, English (professional/business writing, grammar/proofreading, public speaking, and essays), and various Biologies. I have also helped a few people with more practical things like time-management, efficient study habits, etc.
As a person I am very laid-back, but also direct. I have incorporated this into the way I tutor by not coming off as condescending, having vast amounts of patience (tutors have to remember there's a REASON the student has asked for help!), and not just doing the work for you. I am NOT the kind of tutor who will just work problems in front of you, answering questions and explaining them. I work a few in front of you, telling you everything that I am doing and WHY - the why is just as important. Then I let you do some examples, with me being there if you need me every step of the way. I firmly believe the only way to learn anything is through doing it yourself!
Aside from that, for now I am only a part-time student at Tech. This means I have much more free time to help you whenever you need it, so I can work easily around your schedule! Trust me, I enjoy helping and teaching people new things so much that I have considered, and still am considering, a career as a professor at a university one day! I could be just the right person to help you with the subjects that most people struggle with. I will not only help you, but you will begin to see that the subject (whatever it may be) makes complete sense!
I took ballet classes (as well as jazz, tap, and hip hop) from the ages of 6 to 18. I was also in a competition group for the last 4 years of that time, winning two golds and a silver in cities such as Houston, TX and New Orleans, LA.
I have taken both a Business Communications course and a Technical/Professional Writing course (for science-related majors). Between the two I can compose memos, research papers/presentations for a business meeting/proposal, inter-office emails, resumes, cover letters for employment, inquiries, various business letters (informational, persuasive, rejection, follow-ups, etc), and how to present yourself personally in a professional environment.
I took a very rigorous human genetics course, in which I passed with a B+, within the past year. I still to this day think about basic gene patterns when I learn family histories or meet new people.
I assembled and set up my first computer when we got it back in 1996/1997. I am entirely familiar with every Windows system from '97-Win8. Within a few years after my first computer, I could do most things by myself (running thorough diagnostics, setting up networks, backing up information, reformatting, 'cleaning up', ridding it of non-major viruses).
I have taken 2 Organic Chemistry courses (finishing one with a perfect score, and the other with an A-) as well as 2 Organic Chemistry Lab courses. The lectures I enjoyed thoroughly - the subject comes to me as natural as common sense, and I can clearly explain anything I come across. As for the labs, while there is not much I can pull from these experiences directly and use for tutoring, it is extremely helpful to at least hear someone who has performed these experiments in person rather than just on paper.
I have experience working with children of various ages, from 1st grade up to a senior in high school. I have taken several math courses throughout my educational career, a few of which were algebra-based. I have also tutored in high school algebra and pre-algebra.
I have received an A as my final grade in two different speech courses, one online and one in a physical classroom. Speaking in front of people comes naturally to me. At a very young age (6 or 7) I was placed in an "advanced learning" class where my teacher regularly made us do impromptu speeches. As an adult I can speak on almost any subject, am a very efficient and simple speaker, and have learned little tricks and tips that help in any environment - from remembering your speech, to hiding nervousness and coming off as professional in a business setting.
