First you cross multiply, then solve for the variable:
If given a/b = c/d (a is the variable in this example, which is why it is bold) you would multiply a and d, and b and c so it ends up being a*d = b*c, then you solve for a. So if it were a/2 = 3/6, you would end up with:
6a = 6
Then you would solve for a by dividing both sides by the number in front of the variable (the coefficient). In this case, 6a divided by 6 is a, and 6 divided by 6 is 1. So you would end up with a = 1.
