Can you really learn the drums online?

I get this question a lot and it is totally understandable considering the nature of the instrument, but the answer is an unequivocal yes.

Technology has come a long way, even in the last 5 years. Now with zoom's new sound features, screen sharing and video recording, students and teachers have access to tools that weren't available in the past. I have been teaching drum lessons over zoom for the past 3 years and in many ways, I actually prefer it to in person lessons. I also teach students of all ages online, from 5 to 65!

The answer hear depends on a couple of things-do you want to learn marching/concert drums or drum set?Hand technique and reading can all be taught online easily.

However, learning drum set online can be a little more involved and really comes down to a few things-The tech available to both student and teacher, their ability to use the technology, and the learning style of the student.

A high speed connection and at least two camera angles (this can be as simple as a laptop camera and a cell phone) are necessary for drum set lessons. Headphones are also very strongly recommended. While the student and teacher won't be able to play together in real time, demonstration and performing back is easily achieved.

I always provide supplemental digital lesson instruction in the form of audio, sheet music and video for online students. I also may sometimes ask for the student to record a video and sent it to me in order to assess their progress.

If you live somewhere that has limited options for in person lessons, or you aren't able to leave your home for whatever reason, online lessons are a great alternative with the right equipment and instructor.

Students and teachers now have access to resources that weren't previously available because to zoom's new features which can be used to further communicate in innovative ways. Over time, I've been giving drum lessons for the past few years at my church and to students online. Even in the last five years, technology has made significant progress so doing something like learning an instrument is very much possible. I understand, that this is an issue that is frequently raised, and it makes perfect sense given the characteristics of the instrument, yet the answer is most definitely an astounding, yes.
