On Ryan’s last math test, there were two types of questions: multiple choice questions worth 4 points each and true/false questions worth two points each. If Ryan earned 86 points on the test and answered 18 multiple choice questions correctly, how many true/false questions did he answer correctly?

Make a table of what you know and identify what it is you need to answer the question. I used MC for Multiple Choice and T/F for True/False. Enter the values of each question and the 18 correct for MC. The score from the MC questions is 72. We don't know how many T/F questions were correct, so put an X in that spot. The score value from T/F must be 2X. R=The sum of MC and T/F scores equals 86, so write that as an equation and solve.
