the easiest way to solve this is to use variables.  Set Tom=t and Steve = 2t+13 since Steve sold 13 more than twice the amount that tom sold. remember to use parentheses to keep things neat. You will end up with this:

 

t+(2t+13)=76

 

From here, simply evaluate the equation as you normally would.

 

3t+13=76

 

3t+13-13=76-13

 

3t=63

 

Divide both sides by 3 to find the value of the variable.  Don't forget to also work out the value for Steve as well as tom.

 

t=21

2t+13= 55

Steve as S. Tom as T.  S+T=76.  S=13+2T  (13+2T)+T=76-->13+3T=76-->T=63/3-->T=21  S=13+2(21)=55   55+21=76.
