if the temperature outside is -5 what does the negative sign mean

If the units are in Fahrenheit, it is 27 degrees below freezing. (Feeding in Fahrenheit is 32 degrees and under).

 

It is ok you don't know what that is! I was born in a Mediterranean Island. Temperatures never went close to such a thing as -5.

-5 temperature means that it is 5 degrees below zero. If the units are centigrade, it is 5 degrees below freezing.
