These are the toughest type of NCLEX question, and they require a lot of practice to build the skill of consistently answering them correctly. So while you may want to avoid them, you should actually seek out select all that apply questions when the stakes are low (practice, studying etc. as opposed to exams or NCLEX)
There are some general principles to follow. First, pay attention to the stem. Make sure you understand the information. Next pay CLOSE attention to the question. Sometimes we see a word and make assumptions about the question or the answers. All of the statements might relate to the stem, but you have to answer the question that was asked. For instance, NCLEX likes to give you questions that relate to either assessment or interventions. All the answer choices will be appropriate for the stem. However, if the question is asking you for an intervention, you must eliminate the answers that are assessments.
Another tip is to take each of the answers to a select all that apply one at a time and treat them as a true false. When you consider the question, is answer A true or false. Next move to B and repeat the process. Do that for all of the possible answers. Remember that each answer has to stand completely by itself. That means if answer A was true, it has nothing to do with whether answer B is true. You must answer B as if it is the only answer being considered.
A third tip is that in select all that apply the minimum number of correct answers is two. Some students think there has to be at least three and they will mark an incorrect answer just to have three answers. You can have only two correct and leave it at that.
