Microsoft Outlook isn't just a mail repository, it's an intricately integrated mail, calendar, note, contacts and reminder system, a relational database, to be exact. Mail is just part of that container, and separated into several folders (inbasket, outbasket, sent mail, archived, etc.), and even into time periods, linked conversations, etc. Pretty complicated. All this is housed in one container called the "PST" file, short for "Personal Storage Table". Therefore, if you want the organization of the emails to follow you onto another platform, exporting and importing the PST file is the only way to go.
