Other than how a Contact is presented (viewed) in Outlook or Gmail, the only major difference is that you can attach Files within the Notes section of a Contact and individual contacts can be manipulated and/or combined into an e-mail or forwarded to Microsoft OneNote.
Microsoft prides itself greatly on the functionality of its Contact menu because a lot can be done with a Contact other than plugging in information into the fields. You can forward contacts, put them in another MS product, Follow Up with them, make them private.
Google Contacts are great for syncing your contacts on any device that takes a Google Account and has the Contacts option ticked for syncing. You can bring them anywhere and to any device so long as you A) have an Internet connection and B) a Google account.
On top of that, you can export your contacts from a CSV into Google and vice versa into Outlook.
