Hello. User Experience / Design is a great topic - so many websites seem to be so bad at it! And Microsoft is a top offender, although in fairness they're also ubiquitous.
That said, it is not bad design if that's what you want it to do - and that is the case for many users. Why clutter your inbox with invitations when they're on your calendar?
In fact, it is good design that there is a setting that controls this behaviour. The user can choose to keep or delete invitations once declined or accepted. I don't remember offhand where that setting is - good design would be to put a link to that setting in every invitation! Difficulty in finding settings in MS s/w is whole other UX discussion.
