Write it down like this:
Let x=the number
4x+13=(1/2)x-8 the equation
4x-(1/2)x=(-8)-13 combine like terms
(3 1/2)x=-21 simplify
(7/2)x=-21 change 3 1/2 into a fraction
x=(-21)(2/7) multiply both sides by 2/7 to isolate x
x=-6
