In the endoplasmic reticulum, post-translational modifications of the protein, such as glycosylation, methylation, etc., can occur to make the protein functional. The protein is then transported to the Golgi complex for further processing and sorting before transporting to its final destinations, i.e., lysosomes, plasma membrane, or secretion.
