The admission fee for a small fair is $1.50 for children and $4.00 for adults. On a certain day there is 2200 people that enter the fair and $5050 is collected.  How many adults and how many children attended?

let c = number of children

 

a + c = 2200

4a + 1.5c = 5050

 

from 1st equation: a = 2200 - c

Substitute into 2nd equation

 

4(2200 - c) + 1.5c = 5050

8800 - 4c + 1.5c = 5050

-2.5c = 5050 - 8800

-2.5c = -3750

c = -3750/(-2.5)

c = 1500

 

a = 2200-c = 700

 

700 adult tickets and 1500 child tickets
