Let the box with the 2 by 2 base be Box 1 and the one with 4 by base be Box 2:

Volume = Area of the base x height , then for each of our boxes:

Box 1:

V₁ = 2 x 2 x h₁

V₁ = 4h₁

Box 2:

V₂ = 4 x 4 x h₂

V₂ = 16h₂

Now since the volumes are equal:

V₁= V₂

4h₁ = 16h₂ => divide both sides by 4:

h₁ = 4h₂

Thus the box with smaller base area is 4 times as tall as the box with larger base area.
