great solution but can the student now do the next one by herself? I was told we shouldn't be doing the student's homework. Plus it makes my answer given first a total waste of time.

Hello Phillip,
The way I look at it, maybe the student just couldn't do this one problem and asked for help. This is a section where students can post a question and get a solution. I would be more concerned if I saw 3, 4, 5, or more problems posted from the same student, and I have seen this many times. I even remember the students' names.
In this case, I would do maybe one problem, but certainly not all of them. Also, this answer section is a good way for students in our own state or our own part of the state to see how we solve problems. I'm on this website because I am a retired math teacher and want to make a little extra money by tutoring. What better way to get students to tutor than by having them look at our work. If they like what they see, maybe this will help to get some tutoring jobs. By the way, I've seen you do many, many problems on this website and I am very impressed. You have a vast and varied knowledge of mathematics. How come the change of attitude ? You said you were told that we shouldn't do the students' homework. Who told you that ? Several other people have told me the very same thing. This debate about doing or not doing the problems has and always will be an ongoing argument. Everybody has their opinion. As for me, I feel that most of the students post because they really are stuck on a problem and I want to help them and help myself try to get some tutoring jobs. Thanks for your concern. I also feel that if one or more tutors have already done the problem out, then others should not do the problem over and over again unless
there is a mistake or tutors are doing the problems simultaneously or there is a different solution a tutor wants to share with the student. I've done many problems and two or more tutors have done the same problem the same way. I just let it slide. By the way, Phillip, I used to have family in Warwick, RI. My uncle had a pharmacy on Post Road in Warwick. When I was a kid I came to RI many, many times. Thanks for listening. Have a good day.
