Grant was willing to aggressively attack the Southern armies, unlike Union General McClellan, who would not attack without calling for reinforcements. Even when McClellan had overwhelming numerical superiority over the opposing Southern force, he would still ask for reinforcements before attacking. That delay gave the Southern armies time to bring in their own reinforcements, and inflict heavy casualties on Union forces, thus prolonging the war. Grant attacked relentlessly, and although his armies took heavy losses, they defeated the opposing Southern armies.
