Let f = father's age
Let s = son's age
Age of father is 4 times that of his son: f = 4s
Son is 36 years younger than father: s = f-36
Use substitution, replace f with 4s in second equation and solve.
s = 4s - 36
subtract 4s from both sides
-3s = -36
divide both sides by -3
s = 12
The son is 12 years old.
Since the father is 4 times as old. Father is 4(12) = 48 years old.
