Let the number of maple trees purchased be x. Then, the number of pine trees purchased will be 16-x.

Given the information, we can write

10x + 18(16 - x) = 254

10x + 288 - 18x = 254

34 = 8x

x = 4.25 However, this doesn't make sense since we can not have quantity of trees with decimal points. Please check the values.
