yes thanks. i have another question; A vector X is added to vector Y = 12i -16j. The resultant vector lies along the positive x axis and has the same magnitude as X. What is the magnitude of X?

Welcome.
<12i + 16j> added to <12i - 16j> results in a vector on the positive x axis. (draw a diagram).
The addition to two vectors cannot have the same magnitude as one of the vectors (unless one of the vectors is the zero vector).
Please check the problem.

Stumped on the condition that the resultant has the same magnitude as one of the addends.
