michael must build a rectangular storage shed. He wants the length to be 6ft. greater than the width, and the perimeter will be at 44 ft. Find the length and the width of the shed.

For the purposes of this equation, the length will equal "w+6", so it would be set up as follows...

 

2w+2(w+6)=44

 

distribute the 2 to the (w+_6)

 

2w+2w+12=44

 

combine like terms

 

4w+12=44

 

minus 12 from both sides

 

4w=32

 

divide both sides by 4

 

w=8

 

L has to be w+6. so 

 

L=14
