How can you tell when you do (area= base times heigh/2t)

Hi Mohammad;
I tried that...
a2+b2=c2
82+b2=(8.5)2
b=2.87
I do not believe that is what the question is asking.

The height of an isosceles triangle is NOT equal to one of its two equal sides! And, this is not a triangle because 8 + 8 < 17.

I never said that the height of an isosceles triangle is equal to one of its two equal sides.  The figure of 8 is the height of the triangle from the middle of the base to the point where the two equal sides meet.  The student does her best to diagram this.  Her only resource is a computer keyboard which cannot do everything.
