                        4 (X +9)  =20    Four times a number + 9 =20 
 
               =   4x +36  =  20                                                        
                        -36        -36                                 
                  _____________
                   4X          =  -16                               
                 ____           _____            
                   4                 4                            
 
                X=              -4                      
 
                      CHECK:                     
 
              4(-4+9) =20                     
             -16   +36   =20       
 
                 20        =20

4(x+9) = 20
You could immediately divide both sides by 4 giving
x+9 = 5
subtract 9 from both sides
x = -4
