You must answer all correctly to receive a mark.

Boats can only travel one at a time in a one-way shipping channel
All boats take 1 hour to travel through the channel and the next boat cannot enter until it is completely empty
The minimum crew for a boat in the channel is 2 sailors and the captain
The channel closes for only 1 hour each day for maintenance
The channel is always used to full capacity
i) What is the maximum number of boats that could pass through the channel in one week?

ii) What is the minimum number of crew who will pass through the channel in any 24 hour period?

iii) One day 3 of the boats have 5 passengers each, while the rest are on minimum crew. How many people pass through the channel that day?

Answer 1

i)

 

one day is 24 hours,  the channel closes for only 1 hour each day for maintenance,

so boat through the channel in 23 hours 

each boat take 1 hour through the channel, 

so the maximum number of boats travel through the channel in one day is 

 

23 / 1 = 23

 

one week is 7 days, so the maximum number of boats travel through the channel in one week is

 

23 * 7 = 161

 

 

ii)

 

in any 24 hour period, that is in one day, the maximum number of boat travel through the channel is 23,

the minimum number of crew for each boat  is 2 sailors and one captain

 

for 23 boats, the minimum number of crew will be

 

sailors:    2 * 23 = 46

captains: 1 * 23 = 23

 

 

iii)

 

the minimum crew we have get from question ii)

 

sailors are 46, captains are 23

 

the number of passengers in the 3 boats is:

3 * 5 = 15

 

the total number of people is:

46 + 23 + 15 = 84

 

84 people pass through the channel that day
