Let x + 10 = the larger number

 

2x + 3(x+10) = 55   Use the distributive prop. to remove         parentheses.

2x + 3x + 30 = 55     Collect like terms.

5x + 30 = 55              Subtract 30 from both sides.

5x = 25                       Divide both sides by 5.

x = 5, the smaller number

x + 10 = 5 + 10 = 15, the larger number
