Just reading the interpreting the sentence you wrote, I came up with this equation:
2x + 4 = 3(x + 6)
Now, solve for x using algebraically.
2x + 4 = 3(x + 6)   * distribute the 3
2x + 4 = 3x + 18
2x + 4 (- 4) = 3x + 18 (- 4)   * subtract 4 from both sides
2x = 3x + 14
2x (- 3x) = 3x (- 3x) + 14   * subtract 3x from both sides
-1x = 14
-1x • -1= 14 • -1   * multiply both sides by -1
x = -14
Hope this helps!
Neal
