x = 30m/h  *  H₁  (H₁ is the time going out)

 

x = 35m/h  *  H₂  (H₂ is the time coming back)

 

Since the distance is the same,   30 * H₁  =  35 * H₂

 

Also, we know the total time is 3.25

 

hours  (15 minutes being .25 hours)

 

H₁ + H₂ = 3.25

 

Solve for H₁:     H₁ = 3.25 - H₂

 

Plug this into the first equation:   30 * (3.25 -H₂) = 35 * H₂

 

Solve for H₂:  H₂ = 1.5  therefore H₁ = 1.75

 

 

30 * 1.75 = 52.5    35 * 1.5 = 52.5

 

Total distance = 105 miles
