Hi! My name is Rory, and I'm a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I studied Mathematics and Philosophy. I am mainly experienced with and interested in tutoring high school and ACT/SAT math in the Madison, WI area.
During college, I tutored high school students during summers, especially in Algebra, and also helped tutor younger students through university volunteering. I also engaged with student organization work which taught philosophical concepts to interested undergrads.
As a Math major, I learned quite a bit of advanced math :) But through the proof-based curriculum (which are exclusive to Math majors!) I also learned how to explain mathematical reasoning and concepts plainly and clearly, which is an irreplaceable skill for effective tutoring. Moreover, as a double major in Philosophy, I learned how to express myself concisely and persuasively to others, which is no less important for good teaching.
Though a long time ago, it may help to know that in high school, I took and earned scores of 5 on the AP Calculus BC, AP English Composition, and AP English Literature Exams.
Generally, my tutoring process has been to break down difficult concepts in such a way as to facilitate deep understanding, as opposed to pushing rote memorization (although that can be helpful as a supplement).
I take the comfort of my students and reliability of my work with them very seriously, and respond quickly to any requests that they or their parents may have. If you have any extra questions or wish to schedule a lesson, feel free to contact me. Thank you!
