About Tracie

Here to help!

I was a teacher for over 16 years and specialized in Cross Categorical Special Education, History, GED, HSED, Basic Skills, Reading, Political Science, Social Studies, and Geography. I worked with a group of young women who were often victims of trauma and were many years behind their same-aged peers. I loved seeing growth and improvement in my students. I worked with girls who read far below grade level and was able to help them succeed in getting their HSED or high school diploma.

One of my strengths as a teacher is the ability to develop positive relationships with my students and help them become motivated to achieve academic success. I believe in working with students as individuals and challenging them to go as far as they are capable. Many times this involves more than tutoring. Lending an ear, hearing out problems and challenges are all parts of helping a student succeed.

I believe in open communication and flexibility.

I am able to tutor in math up to Algebra I. I have very strong basic math skills, understand Common Core math, and am able to not only teach the mechanics of how something is solved, but why it is that way as well.

I have a personal love of history and politics and over 40 college credits in history and political science. I just helped my son work through AP US History. He scored a 4 on the exam.

In tutoring history, discussions will take place to gain understanding, I have a variety of supplemental materials, a knowledge of a huge grade level span of materials, and a way to make it interesting because I love it and understand that not everyone does.

I also have great English, Reading, and Grammar skills. I think that comes from all of the papers I wrote when studying Social Sciences and History! I am effective in helping students prepare for standardized tests such as the ACT in the areas of English and Reading.

I currently am a trainer for the Department of Corrections. Not only do I train, but I also train others to become trainers. This is helping them develop effective lessons and presentations.

I simply enjoy working with and helping all ages from elementary level to adult!

Contact me and we can work out a good time for tutoring. I am flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Master's in Cross Categorical Special Education as well as over 16 years of teaching kids with ADD/ADHD.

I understand how to effectively motivate students with ADD/ADHD by keeping their minds active, using engaging material, and helping them to slow down to focus and effectively learn.

Career Development

When I was teaching one of my responsibilities was working with a caseload of students in developing their "Career Portfolio."
We worked on resume building, career exploration based on interest and skill levels, interviewing skills, researching the education or qualifications needed for the desired career, soft skills, and then building academic skills to be able to obtain their career goals. That portfolio also contained examples of exemplary work that was created by the student.

Criminal Justice

I have worked for the Department of Corrections for over 22 years.

First, I was a teacher in a juvenile correctional facility where I also taught criminal justice and political science.

Second, I now am a Staff Development Program Specialist for the DOC and train staff in programs that help reduce recidivism, evidence based practices, and training other trainers.

Elementary Math

I worked with middle school and high school students in math, but since most of my students were grade levels behind their peers, I can teach many levels of math.

I am patient, knowledgeable, and flexible with my students.

Public Speaking

I am a trainer for the Department of Corrections and one of the subjects that I train is getting folks prepared to give effective presentations. This, of course, utilizes, effective public speaking skills.

I have been doing this training for 5 years now and it always gets high evaluations and praise. I have had the privilege of seeing some of my students then take what they learned from me and deliver excellent presentations.

Part of the training includes practice and videotaping to analyze one's performance. After the analysis, skills are taught to work on any deficits and more practice takes place. It is one of my favorite training.

Social Studies

I am certified to teach grades 6-12 in Broadfield Social Studies, History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, and Psychology. I spent 16 years teaching Social Studies at Southern Oaks Girls School.

I am passionate about this subject and have taken courses in Social Studies. I recently tutored my son for his AP US History course. He received a 4 on the exam.

Special Needs

I hold a Master's Degree in Cross Categorical Special Education and taught students with special educational needs for over 16 years.

Study Skills

I worked inside a juvenile correctional facility for over 16 years with students who, most often, did not have study skills. It was a large part of my teaching job to work with them on how to effectively study. The average student gained 1 to 3 grade levels within the average 6 month stay.
