I love teaching. One thing I do know is that learning does not come at the same pace for every student. Whether facing new challenges in building math skills, developing new language proficiency, or honing materials already learned, I believe that everyone can learn and have made it my life's work to help students of every age find confidence in their ability to be successful students.

I love teaching. One thing I do know is that learning does not come at the same pace for every student. Whether facing new challenges in building math skills, developing new language proficiency, or honing materials already learned, I believe that everyone can learn and have made it my life's work to help students of every age find confidence in their ability to be successful students.

During my years teaching in PK-12 schools and in higher education, I have focused much of my energies working with students within the special education system. What this has allowed me to do is differentiate learning for every student. I know that learning is a process unique to each and every learner and that finding success and finding confidence may take attempting a number of different methods.

I have successfully tutored numerous students in French, mathematics (pre-Algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and precalculus are my specialties), writing, critical thinking/researching, history and a wide range of other subjects in all age groups from PK-12 through higher education.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. I am excited to join you on this journey to becoming more confident and well-grounded in your studies!

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I have a master's degree in counseling and during my four years as a guidance counselor and four years as director of disability support services in higher education, I have worked closely with students who have ADHD diagnoses.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring algebra 1 to high school and college students for more than ten years. I am familiar and comfortable with the content and strive to help others become that way as well.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra is my favorite subject to teach, tutor, and study. I’ve logged hundreds, if not thousands of hours helping students navigate algebra, deciding this language into better understandable chunks.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have tutored introductory chemistry for well over a decade. Having taken several chemistry courses at the college level and continuing my exploration of chemistry through different professional development opportunities, I enjoy helping others work their way this oftentimes confusing content.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have a masters degree in counseling which has paved the road to more than ten years of experience working in higher education. I have worked with students at all levels of their college career: from admission to academic support, through residence life, during career development and while transitioning to graduate school or the workplace. Prior to working in higher education, I worked as a high school counselor. One of my favorite things about that role was helping young people figure out what their next step will be. It's tremendously rewarding for me to watch young people and individuals pursuing college after some years in the workplace empower themselves to delve into higher education and find the school that fits them best.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

As a LPC, I have taken extensive coursework in pharmacology as one of the most important aspects of how bodies respond to medication involves the interplay between body and medication as well as the reactions that differing medications have with each other. I enjoy the chemistry behind pharmacology as well as the math involved. In learning about numerous medications, I have had to learn my own successful strategies for knowing...not just memorizing...all of the necessary information and can be successful sharing these strategies with my students.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Over the years, I have become extremely proficient in speaking to small, medium and large groups. While academic courses have played an important part of building this competency in my own life, the larger part has been established through practice. It is not always easy to give presentations, but practice and preparation will boost comfort and give a huge dose of confidence when talking to groups of people. Beyond giving numerous presentations to professional and educational bodies ranging from groups of five to five thousand, I have also worked with students of all ages to build the confidence and skills necessary for success in public speaking.
Statistics

Statistics

Professionally, I use statistics on a daily basis to justify and explain the work that I do. Aside from generally loving math, I’ve taken a couple of statistics courses in the past five years to jibe my skills and statistical proficiency.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have worked with students for well over ten years building academic and study skills through reinforcement and a multitude of other intervention techniques. My professional expertise extends from elementary aged students through adults seeking GED & post-secondary degrees.

Patient and cheerful

Melissa has been tutoring our son in algebra. She is unfailingly patient. She does not do his work for him, but walks (or questions) him through whatever mathematical process he needs to be following at any given moment, or for any given math problem. She has a delightful, outgoing personality. We have been pleased, and she has done good work with our son.

Great tutor - prepped my son for back to school

Melissa was very prompt and got right to work with my son. She was friendly, patient and helpful and knew the subject matter very well. He will now be much better prepared to start his Sophomore year.
