Welcome!

I have taught chemistry for several years part-time at a community college while working full time as a chemist. I have experience teaching high school sciences and maths as well as college level inorganic and organic chemistry.

I have a Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of Washington, Seattle, and have been employed as a chemist and educator for over twenty years. I thoroughly enjoy teaching, and tutored all through my college years. My goal as an instructor is to ensure that the student is comfortable with the material, understands the theory/process behind it, and through whatever means available (rote, practice, modeling, schematics, discussion, debate, visual exploration or kinetic exercise) is able to demonstrate that understanding. When teaching, I explore a concept by discussion with the student(s), then demonstrate several applications of the topic, and finally provide practical problems/exercises for review.

In this way, I try to engage students in the subject matter while they strive for competency as well as confidence in the material - even enjoy it(!). Throughout my years as an instructor, I have had the opportunity to work with students of all levels of capability, and am willing and able to assist with study skills or accommodate other needs as well. It is my hope to facilitate their efforts so that they may attain the goals they have set for themselves and advance into their chosen careers.

I have worked as a laboratory chemist and as an instructor at Tacoma Community College for several years. I have also taught high school level sciences and mathematics. I have tutored or taught for the past thirty years. This has provided me with an extensive background for general mathematics. As an instructor, I strive to provide background information and context to my students so that they not only are able to do the work, but have an understanding of the material as well. I like to provide practice material as well so that students may review the subject by rote as necessary. I approach the material in a patient, non-threatening manner, and try to accommodate the student's needs and time-table to the best of my ability. It is my goal to make math an interesting, if not enjoyable subject. I am detail oriented, and very focused on ensuring that whomever I am working with has a comprehensive, worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

I strive to assist students in understanding the 'big picture' as well as the specifics of the material at hand. With sufficient 'vocabulary', the individual topics blend into a mosaic that makes sense, is informative, and useful in many fields such as nursing, bioengineering, biology and other related fields. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you in your efforts to understand and appreciate this challenging field.

Could not have asked for a better tutor!

I am so fortunate that I had Bill as my tutor. It is only with his help that I made it through my pre calculus class maintaining a decent grade average as well as my sanity. He is so patient, which is imperative when trying to make someone understand things that are completely out of their comfort zone. If I didn't understand his explanation for a problem/concept, then he'd try it from different angles until I did. His demeanor and approach helped me to relax and not view every aspect of pre calculus as terrifying, and once I was able to do that, it in turn increased my confidence. As this was the last class standing between me and my degree and I was not at all confident I was going to be able to pass it when I first started, "thank you" does not seem adequate, but since that's all I can do... THANK YOU!!!!

the best chemistry tutor

My son loves working with William! He helps him understand chemistry concepts so well. Explains very well. Thank you for your help!

One of thee BEST Chem tutors!!

Knowledgeable but also knows how to teach and convey the help needed. Great to keep weekly to learn from the level you are at but also great to build upon into advancement. We have worked on electron configuration and how to illustrate non-metals proclivity to gain electrons and attempt to gain a configuration isoelectronic with a noble gas. We did an overview of periodic trends (electronegativity, radius, Zeff) and Lewis Dot Structures. Great demeanor. I know this tutor has the capacity to help me continue through the following Semesters so that I understand it, not just get by.

Wonderfully helpful!

Bill was extremely helpful in filling in the holes when it comes to working with Heat. He graciously took the time to go over each definition and explain the many equations needed to complete my homework questions.

In our session, I was really struggling to understand some basics of stoichiometry and William helped to break down each step and to visually show every part of the process. Thank you!

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor

Mr. William is very knowledgeable in the chemistry area. He explained very well in a way that made sense to learn the concept. You can tell he is passionate about the topic and asked me to make sure I grasp the material well.

So thankful for Bill!

My son Lucas has been working with Bill for a couple of months now, and we have seen a huge improvement in his math skills and his confidence! From the very start, Bill was very easy to talk to, patient, friendly, and just so helpful! Lucas went from dreading anything math related, and now actually looking forward to his weekly lessons with Bill. We feel extremely lucky that we found such an awesome tutor. Thank you, Bill!

Great Tutor

Bill is a fantastic tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable in organic chemisty and can also help and answer questions in related fields such as biology. He takes the time to answer all my questions and is very patient when I don't understand something. He has a great sense of humor and makes his sessions not only informative by entertaining!
