I'm Maddy! I graduated from Pitzer College (of the Claremont Colleges) with honors; my degree is in Sociology, Organizational Studies, and Politics. I'm a Fulbright Scholar and completed a Fulbright fellowship teaching English in Malaysia. Subsequently, I taught Social Studies at a prestigious high school English Program in Thailand. Throughout this time, I worked with US students on college essay coaching, executive functioning, and writing. I'm back in the US and am excited to continue working with students here!

Academics have the potential to be profoundly empowering or deeply disempowering and my goal as a tutor is always to work collaboratively with students to make the process as painless (and maybe even enjoyable!) as possible.

My expertise is in essay coaching and writing. My students have received Fulbright fellowships, and acceptances to top universities as well as graduate, medical, business, and law schools (such as Stanford, Johns Hopkins, GW, Duke, NYU, NYU Stern, UVA, and UCLA). While I don't see these outcomes as the most important part of the process, I've loved having the opportunity to work with students toward these successes.

I additionally do executive functioning coaching, subject-tutoring, and I love to teach and edit writing. My work with writers spans academic essays, theses, creative pursuits, applications, and resumes. I have worked with students ages six through sixty and I would be happy to work with you regardless of age and/or experience!

I spent four years working as a Head Fellow at Pitzer College's Writing Center, where I participated in 50+ hours of training regarding tutoring and writing strategies. Additionally, I have a breadth of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students and I am experienced with ESL students as a lead-teacher.

Above all, my aim is to forge positive connections with students, and to make the tutoring process as confidence-boosting as possible.

ADHD

ADHD

I'm an experienced study skills and executive functioning coach! As someone with ADHD, I know how difficult grappling with the stresses of academics can be! I graduated at the top of my class in 2019 and have spent the past few years working as a teacher and academic coach. I am a Fulbright Scholar with a breadth of experience working with students to manage academics, college applications, and graduate applications. I have worked as a lead teacher as well as a 1:1 tutor, and have loved being able to help students realize their potential through creating personalized study-systems tailored to their needs and strengths. Emotionally, I work on developing self-compassion and healthy mindsets toward work. Logistically, I work with students to create plans, solutions, and strategies to make sure they achieve academic success and life balance. My students have improved their grades, caught up on late work, and developed long-term skills for success regarding prioritization and time management. In terms of experience, I worked in mental health spaces facilitating workshops and support for college students dealing with trauma for several years and I’m trained in trauma-informed response. With this in mind, I am continuously learning about the intersections of mental health and executive functioning and I operate from a trauma-informed lens. Additionally, I spent four years working at Pitzer College’s Writing Center where I participated in 50+ hours of training regarding inclusive tutoring and writing strategies. I am not a trained therapist - just someone who loves to help co-create solutions and strategies for success and who can very much empathize with how mental health impacts academics.
Career Development

Career Development

I’ve read a lot of resumes, cover letters, and interview anecdotes. Most are dry, forgettable, and so generic that you end up feeling like you know less about the author than when you started. Reading resumes all day can lead to an existential crises of boredom. In a sea of corporate mumbo-jumbo like “leveraged stakeholder engagement,” “team player,” “wore many hats,” and “thrived in a fast-paced environment,” together we will make your strengths actually stand out, make sense, and offer real insight. One of my favorite parts of this work is helping clients identify the stories and strengths that are not only impressive, but genuinely memorable. I’m 100% confident that you have compelling, meaningful stories to tell; the key is learning how to tell them in a way that’s succinct, engaging, strategic, and effective. I can help you do exactly that. As a Fellow, I was trained by Pitzer College’s Writing Center in how to craft standout job applications, and over the last several years, I’ve worked with countless clients on every part of the process. I’m happy to support wherever you need help—but I’ll admit that interview prep is hands down my favorite part of the job.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I'm happy to work with you on any stage of the writing process, whether it be last-minute final edits, brainstorming content and outlining, or anything in between! College and graduate school essay coaching has been a focus of mine for the past several years. My students have successfully won Fulbright Fellowships, scholarships, and acceptances to top colleges as well as law, medical and graduate schools (including Stanford, UCLA, Duke, NYU, UVA, and UChicago, among many others). Previously, I spent four years as a Fellowship Specialist at Pitzer College's Writing Center. Here, I took part in 50+ hours of training geared toward understanding what readers look for in fellowship, grad-school, and grant applications. I have a breadth of experience working with students on personal statements, applications, resumes, and cover letters; I work with clients throughout all stages of the writing process, ranging from brainstorming to fine-tuning. Additionally, I have TA'd the course, Global-Local Teaching Workshop, which solely focused on working with students to craft Fellowship Applications. I have worked extensively with students seeking to transfer colleges, and I'm very familiar with the undergrad application process, the Common Application Essay, the UC system, and with the values of many colleges throughout the country. Additionally, I have extensive experience with graduate, law, and medical school application processes. I simply love working with students on college and graduate school applications. It's both an exciting and overwhelming time, and I work collaboratively with clients to figure out how we can make the process as painless (and hopefully enjoyable!) as possible.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I'm Maddy! I work with all ages, but I love working at the elementary level. My favorite area to tutor is writing, and I'm very experienced with English and humanities in general. I'm happy to work with students on existing classwork and/or to create personalized curriculums to help develop their skills (I'm experienced with both). I've been a lead-classroom ESL teacher for elementary students and have worked with elementary students at YTP Seattle, The Bush School, and The Evergreen School as a tutor and camp counselor. I'm excited to work with your student to make the tutoring process as fruitful, confidence-boosting, and fun as possible! In addition to subject and writing tutoring, I work as an executive functioning coach, supporting students with organizational and study skills in order to boost their academics, confidence, and to tools for success. I have experiencing working with students with ADHD, anxiety, OCD, and other mental health issues that make the school environment more challenging, and I love working collaboratively with students to figure out how they can succeed. Feel free to reach out with any questions; I'd love to meet you and your student!
English

English

I've spent time working as an English teacher, tutor, and writing coach. I love writing and English, but I can totally appreciate that it's an enormous challenge and source of frustration for many people. My experience spans lead-teaching in a classroom, to small groups, to one-on-one tutoring. I'm happy to help with existing classwork and/or to create a personalized curriculum that develops your skills and meets your specific needs (I have plenty of experience with both). I'm confident that in working with you, I can make it a non-terrible (and probably even enjoyable) process; I'm also confident that I can teach you skills you will take with you throughout your life. I work with college, high school, elementary, adult students, and I'm more than happy to chat with you to see if we would be a good fit regardless of your age or experience!
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have ESL experience spanning many age groups! For four years, I worked at a college writing center, helping college-age ESL students perfect and develop their writing skills. Following this, I worked as an English teaching assistant through the Fulbright program in Malaysia where I taught English to elementary, middle, and high school students ranging low to high levels of proficiency. Subsequently, I was the lead Social Studies and English teacher at a prestigious middle and high school English program in Thailand. I love working with ESL students and hope to continue doing so in the future - I'd be happy to work with you whether you're an adult or school-age! Feel free to reach out with questions.

I'm a writer, editor, tutor, and teacher. I specialize in working with students on all aspects of the writing process, including grammar. I was a dedicated writing fellow for four years, and have 50+ hours of training in tutoring strategies specifically regarding writing. I'd be more than happy to work with you!
Proofreading

Proofreading

I am a professional proofreader, editor, and ghost-writer. I love writing, but what I love even more is improving existing writing. I provide editing services that span content, structure, flow, and voice down to grammar, proofreading, and fine-tuning. Having worked as a dedicated writing fellow and editor for four years, I'm trained in what colleges, graduate schools, and organizations look for in applications as well as what generally constitutes successful written work. I have worked with countless clients on editing over the course of the past six years and I'd love to work with you to make your writing as flawless as possible.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I coach students to a place of confidence and competence with interviewing and speaking. My focus is on college admissions interview prep and I am happy to work with you on general public speaking as well! As an experienced public speaker having taught classes of 30+, spoken to school groups of up to 2,000, facilitated workshops of all sizes, run staff meetings, and facilitated focus-groups, I love to share my skillset with others. Additionally, having made hiring decisions and executed student-interviews for school admissions and job opportunities, I'm versed in the interview process and love to work with folks on refining their skills!

Writing

For the past four years, I worked as a Fellow, Fellowship Consultant, and Head Fellow at Pitzer College's Writing Center. This experience entailed a twelve-week course (Writing Center Praxis & Theory) as well as yearly training surrounding pedagogy. As a fellow, I tutored students ages seventeen to sixty-five throughout all stages of the writing process and edited student work. I have worked with students on developing strong arguments, improving structure, brainstorming, engaging sources effectively, planning the writing process, strengthening the style, and addressing grammar/mechanics. The bulk of my clients were working on academic papers, senior theses, and graduate school personal statements. As a Fellowship Specialist, I attended specialized trainings geared toward understanding how to craft successful fellowship applications, personal statements, and grant proposals. I additionally took and subsequently TA'd the course, Global-Local Teaching Workshop, the content of which entailed assisting students in writing Fellowship Applications. As a Head Fellow, I mentored other tutors, developed and led staff meetings and training sessions regarding tutoring strategies, and led a weekly thesis-writing workshop. I love working with students on writing in any capacity, and my breadth of experience qualifies me to work with students of all levels! I have worked with students on academic papers, senior theses, fellowship applications, graduate school personal statements, law, medical school, and job applications, lab reports, creative writing endeavors, and resumes.

You want Maddy to be your tutor.

I could write pages on how significant Maddy has been for me throughout my graduate applications process, but I will try to keep it short because I want you to read my entire review. I have been working with Maddy since Summer 2021, initially for graduate admissions coaching and assistance with essays and, later, interview prep for admissions interviews. Maddy spent time getting to know me and my story, helping to craft application essays that fit my personality and style, in line with my beliefs, and focused on expressing what mattered to me. I struggled with confidently getting my words out on paper. Maddy helped pull out the critical pieces while still capturing my passion, emotion, and drive. I became a better storyteller and writer; I have since found myself using her hints and tips to become a more relevant, engaging writer. We spent a significant amount of time together doing interview prep. I was SO nervous about my admissions interviews. Maddy formulated questions and helped me create outlines and design answers to many probable questions. I went into my interviews prepared with a multitude of stories and examples to craft relevant responses. Then, we practiced. And practiced. I initially lacked confidence in speaking my responses and felt that I needed to have a “script” in front of me. In one of our (many) practice sessions, Maddy advised that I hide my script while responding to questions. I was suddenly more passionate and emphatic and believable and charismatic. Her advice and encouragement brought out so much more personality than a script, and I was able to let my authenticity shine through. I have aced all my interviews and would not have been as successful without her; Maddy has truly been my secret weapon.

Excellent executive function skills tutor!!!

Madeline has been a life saver for my kids, specially for Alan who was about to lose his scholarship in the army and abandon college. Her guidance and advice worked miracles and now he is back in track ! My son is like a different person, he is now more confident, so motivated and focused. He got back his scholarship and save his semester.I know her time fee is hard to afford but it 100% worth! Thank you Madeline for the changes you have made in my son’s life. Elsa

Transformative Executive Functioning Coach

I have been working with Maddy for the better part of five years. We first collaborated on graduate-school application and essay writing, and our work has since expanded to other projects, including executive-functioning coaching. Maddy is an absolute delight to work with and I am happy to sing her praises. She is kind, empathetic, unfailingly reliable, and always goes the extra mile to help in any way she can. Maddy is diligent, organized, and always has creative solutions for just about any problem you can think of. On a personal note, Maddy has been instrumental in my own growth. In every capacity in which I have worked with her, Maddy consciously and consistently strives to empower me to realize my full potential. From essays and research papers to public speaking and interactions with peers and professors, working with Maddy has helped me to move through life more confidently. She listens attentively, meets me where I am, and fosters my sense of agency without judgement. Whatever your goals are, I wholeheartedly recommend using Maddy as your tutor/coach.

Not just a tutor, but a role model to inspire and motivate

Hello! Arly's mom here: I am incredibly grateful for everything Madeline has done for my daughter, Arly. She has taught her how to navigate life’s challenges with dignity and take on the responsibilities of her adult/academic life. As a result, I now see Arly as more organized, positive, and motivated to move forward. More than just a tutor, Arly needed the guidance of a compassionate and sensible adult who could communicate with her on her level, understanding her without judging her weaknesses. Madeline provides the kind of advice that we, as mothers, wish our children would heed—though they often won’t listen to us. Now, Madeline has started helping my son, Alan, Arly’s twin brother. I am confident that the life lessons they learn from her will greatly benefit them in the future.

Supportive, Silly, and Skillful Essay Editor!

Maddy is super fun to work with and receptive of all student ideas. She is great at being supportive but also knows how to guide students in the most effective direction. She is incredibly knowledgeable in her writing and also a great person to chat with. I never felt intimidated by or uncomfortable sharing my story with Maddy, which allowed me to be completely authentic in my writing and in asking questions. I enjoyed every minute of my meetings with Maddy and was able to create what I believe to be some of my best writing with her. I’m now committed to Cornell University thanks to her feedback and assistance with college essays!

11th Hour College App Brainstorming and Editing

Madeline is an incredibly talented writer and editor! My senior connected with her on her common app essay after it was completed as she was looking for editing assistance. In the end, Madeline's advice went much further than editing as she gave our daughter a greater perspective on what admissions officers want to know about her more personally. Although initially unplanned, Madeline reviewed a few of her supplemental essays as well. Our daugther's overall essay submission were largely enhanced due to Madeline's coaching! I was impressed with how quickly Madeline was able to prioritize our requests and helped our daughter meet her deadlines for submission. I'm looking forward to utilizing Madeline's services (and natural talent) with future needs!

My rising 8th grader needs significant help in writing improvement—I call his current style “word vomit.” Enter Maddie! After sending her a writing sample, she quickly developed a summer plan. She engages my son with conversation and eases him into the session using topics that interest him. He is actually excited to work on writing with Maddie…even in the summer! I couldn’t ask for anything more and am grateful for her expertise!
