I'm Maddy! I graduated from Pitzer College (of the Claremont Colleges) with honors; my degree is in Sociology, Organizational Studies, and Politics. I'm a Fulbright Scholar and completed a Fulbright fellowship teaching English in Malaysia. Subsequently, I taught Social Studies at a prestigious high school English Program in Thailand. Throughout this time, I worked with US students on college essay coaching, executive functioning, and writing. I'm back in the US and am excited to continue working with students here!

Academics have the potential to be profoundly empowering or deeply disempowering and my goal as a tutor is always to work collaboratively with students to make the process as painless (and maybe even enjoyable!) as possible.

My expertise is in essay coaching and writing. My students have received Fulbright fellowships, and acceptances to top universities as well as graduate, medical, and law schools (such as Stanford, Duke, NYU, Pomona, and UCLA). While I don't see these outcomes as the most important part of the process, I've loved having the opportunity to work with students toward these successes.

I additionally do executive functioning coaching, subject-tutoring, and I love to teach and edit writing. My work with writers spans academic essays, theses, creative pursuits, applications, and resumes. I have worked with students ages six through sixty and I would be happy to work with you regardless of age and/or experience!

I spent four years working as a Head Fellow at Pitzer College's Writing Center, where I participated in 50+ hours of training regarding tutoring and writing strategies. Additionally, I have a breadth of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students and I am experienced with ESL students as a lead-teacher.

Above all, my aim is to forge positive connections with students, and to make the tutoring process as confidence-boosting as possible.

Feel free to reach out with questions, for references, or for a free consultation!

I coach students to a place of confidence and competence with interviewing and speaking. My focus is on college admissions interview prep and I am happy to work with you on general public speaking as well! As an experienced public speaker having taught classes of 30+, spoken to school groups of up to 2,000, facilitated workshops of all sizes, run staff meetings, and facilitated focus-groups, I love to share my skillset with others. Additionally, having made hiring decisions and executed student-interviews for school admissions and job opportunities, I'm versed in the interview process and love to work with folks on refining their skills!

Subsequently, I was the lead Social Studies and English teacher at a prestigious middle and high school English program in Thailand. I graduated at the top of my class in 2019 and have spent the past few years working as a teacher and academic coach. I am a Fulbright Scholar with a breadth of experience working with students to manage academics, college applications, and graduate applications. I've spent time working as an English teacher, tutor, and writing coach. I'm happy to help with existing classwork and/or to create a personalized curriculum that develops your skills and meets your specific needs (I have plenty of experience with both). You want Maddy to be your tutor.

I can not say enough great things about Maddy. I connected with her for help with graduate school admissions and our sessions have exceeded my expectations. I need a little hand-holding sometimes and Maddy is right there for it. She is kind and patient and has been SO helpful in helping me accomplish to-do's within my timeframe, which for me can be a bit of a struggle. I can ask her the same question ten times and she responds with patience every single time. Maddy has also been super helpful in giving me new and different ways to think about tasks that I'm struggling with, breaking them down so that they are easy and manageable. She is a rockstar.

From drab to fab - medical school personal statement

If you are still considering using Maddy for your tutoring services, stop considering and do it! I had reached out to Maddy for support and guidance with my medical school personal statement. I had written a draft before that read too much like a CV and my passion and interests were lost in writing about my qualifications. My first meeting with Maddy was incredible! She asked me a series of questions like the first time I thought about being a doctor, what that felt like, what some of the work that I do is like, what challenges I have experienced and so on. Maddy developed writing prompts for me that I could free write to, and as someone who has never been a particularly strong writer, I had never enjoyed the writing process so much. The classic "show don't tell" has been extremely challenging for me always, but Maddy pushed me to further describe my strengths through moments and stories of my work and experiences. I was so beyond proud of the personal statement we were able to write together - I have personally never felt so captured and never felt so represented than in that essay and it could not have been done without Maddy.

Seriously incredible executive functioning coach

I have struggled with executive dysfunction my entire life and recently it has become completely unmanageable. Just when I was on the verge of giving up completely, I found Maddy and she did literal wonders in helping me get back on track. She goes well beyond the expectations of a tutor/coach and has genuinely helped me turn my life around in just a few weeks. I have never had a more positive or impactful experience with an EF coach, and I highly recommend her to anyone seeking an encouraging, understanding, very motivating coach or tutor.

My Teenager Approves

Teens can be a tricky audience, so finding someone who can speak their language and bring them along on a program is a gift. So thrilled that we have found Madeline to help our rising senior with getting college ready, and applying to colleges, etc. Such a weight off my shoulders!

Great guidance!

Madeline is taking my son through writing exercises to make him a more confident writer. The goal is to get him over his fear of getting started writing college papers. It is going well.

AMAZING⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I learned so much, and she makes everything sound so easy! Definitely going back for more lessons. One of the smartest people I’ve met, but not in a condescending way.

Knowledgeable and Extremely Helpful!

Hiring a tutor for the first time was nerve reckoning, especially when it's for your statement of purpose. I was afraid that Madeline and I would not be a good match, but I was wrong. She is such a phenomenal Tutor. Madeline listens to you and guides you in whatever direction you want your paper to go; she also gives a lot of feedback on how one can improve. I would recommend her if you are looking for some help with your statement of purpose.

Great teacher!

Madeline G. Was extremely attentive and really helped me brainstorm ideas for my personal statement for a Masters program! I was able to let her know what I was expecting out of my future essay and she really tailored my experiences to create great ideas for what I should write about! I definitely plan on using her services again in the near future!
