I'm Maddy! I graduated from Pitzer College (of the Claremont Colleges) with honors; my degree is in Sociology, Organizational Studies, and Politics. I'm a Fulbright Scholar and completed a Fulbright fellowship teaching English in Malaysia. Subsequently, I taught Social Studies at a prestigious high school English Program in Thailand. Throughout this time, I worked with US students on college essay coaching, executive functioning, and writing. I'm back in the US and am excited to continue working with students here!

Academics have the potential to be profoundly empowering or deeply disempowering and my goal as a tutor is always to work collaboratively with students to make the process as painless (and maybe even enjoyable!) as possible.

My expertise is in essay coaching and writing. My students have received Fulbright fellowships, and acceptances to top universities as well as graduate, medical, business, and law schools (such as Stanford, Johns Hopkins, GW, Duke, NYU, NYU Stern, UVA, and UCLA). While I don't see these outcomes as the most important part of the process, I've loved having the opportunity to work with students toward these successes.

I additionally do executive functioning coaching, subject-tutoring, and I love to teach and edit writing. My work with writers spans academic essays, theses, creative pursuits, applications, and resumes. I have worked with students ages six through sixty and I would be happy to work with you regardless of age and/or experience!

I spent four years working as a Head Fellow at Pitzer College's Writing Center, where I participated in 50+ hours of training regarding tutoring and writing strategies. Additionally, I have a breadth of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students and I am experienced with ESL students as a lead-teacher.

Above all, my aim is to forge positive connections with students, and to make the tutoring process as confidence-boosting as possible.

Feel free to reach out with questions, for references, or for a free consultation!

I coach students to a place of confidence and competence with interviewing and speaking. My focus is on college admissions interview prep and I am happy to work with you on general public speaking as well! As an experienced public speaker having taught classes of 30+, spoken to school groups of up to 2,000, facilitated workshops of all sizes, run staff meetings, and facilitated focus-groups, I love to share my skillset with others. Additionally, having made hiring decisions and executed student-interviews for school admissions and job opportunities, I'm versed in the interview process and love to work with folks on refining their skills!

Subsequently, I was the lead Social Studies and English teacher at a prestigious middle and high school English program in Thailand. I love working with ESL students and hope to continue doing so in the future - I'd be happy to work with you whether you're an adult or school-age! Feel free to reach out with questions.

I'm happy to help with existing classwork and/or to create a personalized curriculum that develops your skills and meets your specific needs (I have plenty of experience with both). College writing

Madeline is highly recommended!. She assisted in organizing, editing, and writing. She also generously offered her time to do editing afterwards. She was requested on two occasions and was incredibly helpful each time.

A Careful listener offering excellent suggestions

Madeline listened carefully to my explanation of what led me to access Wyzant. It was important to me in or first meeting to offer descriptions of my school experience and previous work with tutors ( it is lengthy and complicated) to ensure our work together is meaningful and productive, helping me develop time management and organizational skills for success in graduate school. I feel inspired by her manner of ease and accuracy of her feed back. Madeline is incredibly professional, focused and connects in a way to make you feel at ease. I feel confident I will meet my goal to become an FNP with her help.

HIGHLY recommend!

Madeline helped me enormously with the essay I was struggling with; she gave extremely helpful feedback, made in-text edits, and communicated in a way that made it feel doable and non-stressful (despite a lot needing to change). She also gave me tips and feedback that generally made me feel more confident as a writer and gave me direction for the future. She's talented and super encouraging, helpful, and relatable - makes you feel comfortable while genuinely helping you improve. 1000% recommend and will be back for my next paper! thank you again!

Insightful and knowledgeable

Madeline made insightful contributions to the college essay writing process. She asked my son to respond to prompts that delved deeper so that his essay responses would not be simple generic statements. The result is more introspective writings that reflect my son's personality.

Amazing and kind tutor

I loved Madeline’s amazing support and assistance with my college applications! You can tell she truly cares and even when she’s busy, she will do anything to squeeze in time and help so much. Most importantly, she will give her all to help in any way. She will help and alter the lessons to what you need/want. Madeline helped me so much when I was struggling outlining, cutting words, checking grammar, structuring, and so much more with my essays. I am so happy with her feedback and how my essays turned out. I really felt like her guidance made a difference in my application and helped me get into my top choice for college.

Best tutor I have EVER encountered

I promise you want Maddy to be your tutor!! I have always really struggled with writing and executive functioning. I'm a bright girl and a good student with a strong work ethic, but I also have ADHD and anxiety and have always had trouble navigating the writing process, especially the early stages. I have worked with countless tutors over the past decade, but none even begin to compare to Maddy. As a first semester college freshman, I found myself in a crisis with a 5 page paper due in 8 hours and nothing to work with but paralyzing anxiety and a blank document. My mom sent me Maddy's profile; she responded to my call for help promptly, fit me into her schedule within hours, and I ultimately submitted the essay on time AND received a perfect score. Most importantly, Maddy makes the most daunting tasks feel manageable and does so in a highly encouraging and productive manner. When I am too overwhelmed to begin and struggling to organize my thoughts, Maddy breaks things down into smaller, simpler questions for me to respond to and then helps me lay it all out into a manageable outline in a shared doc. She is incredibly kind, patient, and understanding, regardless of how much of a mess I may be, and does a miraculous job guiding me out of crisis mode and towards productivity. After that first crisis, I have and will continue to reach out to Maddy for writing help in various classes for all stages of the writing process. I have never encountered a more positive and genuinely helpful writing tutor/coach- so intelligent and respectful. I highly recommend!!!

You want Maddy to be your tutor.

I could write pages on how significant Maddy has been for me throughout my graduate applications process, but I will try to keep it short because I want you to read my entire review. I have been working with Maddy since Summer 2021, initially for graduate admissions coaching and assistance with essays and, later, interview prep for admissions interviews. Maddy spent time getting to know me and my story, helping to craft application essays that fit my personality and style, in line with my beliefs, and focused on expressing what mattered to me. I struggled with confidently getting my words out on paper. Maddy helped pull out the critical pieces while still capturing my passion, emotion, and drive. I became a better storyteller and writer; I have since found myself using her hints and tips to become a more relevant, engaging writer. We spent a significant amount of time together doing interview prep. I was SO nervous about my admissions interviews. Maddy formulated questions and helped me create outlines and design answers to many probable questions. I went into my interviews prepared with a multitude of stories and examples to craft relevant responses. Then, we practiced. And practiced. I initially lacked confidence in speaking my responses and felt that I needed to have a “script” in front of me. In one of our (many) practice sessions, Maddy advised that I hide my script while responding to questions. I was suddenly more passionate and emphatic and believable and charismatic. Her advice and encouragement brought out so much more personality than a script, and I was able to let my authenticity shine through. I have aced all my interviews and would not have been as successful without her; Maddy has truly been my secret weapon.
