Bio

Originally from Brooklyn, NY, I have played chess for over 40 years and have been teaching chess since 2003. I was the first chess coach of the current under-12 female World Chess Champion, Rochelle Wu. I taught her how to play chess using my winning method whereby students of the game learn and advance rapidly, quickly becoming champions of the game. I am one of only eight people in the country to earn the title of National Chess Coach from the United States Chess Federation.

Rapid Comprehension Thru Effective Teaching (RCTET) is the method I have invented. Having the ability to remember how chess occurred to me I have invented a new way to learn the game. This is especially important for today's 21st century students. The old method of teaching chess has lost multitudes of students who found learning to play the game way too cumbersome. Information overload and the time it takes to learn to be proficient can be big draw backs for learning. My new way streamlines the learning curve; allowing any student to rapidly grasp the essentials of the Royal Game.

USCF Level IV National Chess Coach. I am one of only eleven people in the United States to earn this title from the United States Chess Federation.

My chess students have won numerous team and individual championships and tournaments at the city, state, regional and national levels. I have produced twenty-two (22) Alabama state champions, and currently coach the high school championship team in Alabama - accomplishments achieved within a few years with novice players.

I am also the founder and CEO of Magic City Chess U (University), a non-profit organization that provides children an opportunity to learn chess on an advanced level and strives to foster an appreciation of chess. Members of my chess team won the gold medal at the 2008 U.S. Youth Games in Oakland, CA and the 2009 U.S. Youth Games in Coco Beach, FL.

I have played chess for over 40 years and have been teaching chess since 2003. I am one of only eleven people in the United States to earn the title of Level IV National Chess Coach from the United States Chess Federation. I've created my own method of teaching chess whereby students of the game learn and advance rapidly, quickly becoming champions of the game. Using my method, results have been achieved by my students who went from absolute beginners to State and National Champions!

A proven teacher- not just a high ranked player

Sometimes chess coaches boast their high ELO or whatever. However they end up not being experienced at TEACHING chess. Charles is well versed in the fundamentals in chess education and has a defined methodology which aligns well with my learning style. Great coach!

Highly experienced with children, calm, patient, knowledgeable, and very pleasant!

Charles was amazing with my 7 year old who has perfectionist syndrome & was dismayed when he discovered he didn't know the game like he thought. He was patient with him and gave him great advice. Charles was exactly what I hoped for in every way. My son repeatedly asked me to inform Charles that he wanted to continue lessons with him. This is just the beginning!

Knowledge and patient

We had 2 classes with coach Smith. He was unbelievably patient with my son, even he was 30 min late. My son enjoys his classes a lot! Definitely recommend him to everyone who wants to learn chess!

great chess coach

I wish I could give more then five stars. My son left so happy. Before we got to the car he wanted to know when he could meet Charles again. So much great information. Very patient. Very excited to continue his chess lessons.

Excellent and motivational instructor. Highly recommended

I booked a lesson from Charles as a Christmas present for my dad who is a longtime chess lover. Charles was great and my dad really enjoyed the lesson. Here’s what my dad says: “Excellent and motivational instructor. Highly recommended.”

Knowledgeable, patient, and personable.

I was learning chess on my own for about 9 months prior to working with Charles. He was quickly able to identify areas of my game to improve. He is coaching me to play disciplined attack minded chess. His methods help me to simplify the complexity of positions in a timely manner and make better decisions and moves. We flex the principles of chess when required and strive for efficient development. We look for opportunities to exploit opponent mistakes and weaknesses in their position. He also reviews some of my games and provides feedback good or bad. He is honest and clear in his critiques but also complimentary. I look forward to our next lesson.

1st Chess Lesson

Charles is a gem. I am an adult, just learning how to play chess. Charles' in-person instructional technique was fun and engaging. I feel like I got a lot out of the lesson. I definitely intend on taking lessons from him again. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Your Game Will Improve

I was shocked how much better I am just after one lesson. Can't wait to have more lessons with Charles who was patient, fun, knowledgeable, and passionate. Let's see how high he can help take my game!

Amazing Chess Coach

There are teachers, there are instructors and there are coaches. Charles is undoubtedly the latter, clearly skilled in the game of chess he makes it clear from the very start that his goal is to build technical proficiency and a love for the game in equal measure. Thoughtful, clear, direct and passionate, Charles deconstructed my ability (or lack there of) in about five minutes and began giving me the tools to think about not only what to do but why to do it. I cannot recommend Charles highly enough. I am already looking forward to my next lesson.

Accomplished coach and patient tutor

Charles is an accomplished chess coach with impeccable credentials, but he's also a nice man who's supportive and patient. The method he teaches has produced chess players who've won state championships and national tournaments. During his lesson, he doesn't just lecture--he asks questions to ensure his student understands what he's teaching. And not only does he NOT get upset when his student makes a mistake, he expects it; and he encourages his student when it happens. He's an outstanding chess tutor!
