I am a visual artist trained in drawing, photography, and ceramics, a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. My work is diverse in medium, often public. I teach, as a traveling artist for the state, visiting artist at the University of North Carolina, K-12 at the Seattle Art Museum, ceramics at the fire arts facility Pratt in Seattle, teaching artist leadership training at Lincoln Center, NYC, and online with students across the country.

Drawing is a keystone skill and will be the foundation of my work with you. The basis of learning to draw is learning to see. My teaching practice is focused on observation drawing, investigating how mark making creates form, value control creates space in two dimensions. Explore graphite, conté, colored pencils, watercolor, pen and ink. Learn how color works. Deepen your knowledge of contemporary art.

Having reviewed portfolios on National Portfolio Day for many years, I'm familiar with what design schools and universities are looking for in prospective students. Making art is taking risks, it's a search to explore and express your unique identity. At the last Portfolio Day, a student and I talked for a long time. He walked away, then turned all the way around and came back to me to say, "Everyone here I talked to all day told me what to do to get into their schools. You are the only person who listened to what I had to say, where I am coming from, what I want to accomplish. Thank you."

Let's talk about where your starting point is, what you want to learn, and how I can help you. I am hands off your work, brain on for your questions.

Drawing

Drawing

I am a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, including their stellar Foundation year in drawing. Drawing is an integral part of my work as an artist, whether I am sketching new ideas or preparing a final design for fabrication. I am an experienced teaching artist, in K-12, Elementary Bilingual, university undergraduate and graduate, community art, and individual mentoring. My students are of all ages and disciples.
Painting

Painting

I am a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Rhode Island School of Design, where I studied figure drawing, nature drawing, painting, calligraphy, ceramics, sculpture, and design. As artist in residence for the Washington State Arts Commission, I worked with K-12 classes. I taught for Powerful Schools for six years, and painting has always been integral to my curriculum. I worked in ceramics for 35 years, with painting and brushwork a large part of my studio practice.

Patient, Professional, and Inspiring!

She is an amazing teacher who has helped my child grow so much as a young artist. What makes her special is how she gives guidance while letting my daughter express her own creativity. Her patience and encouraging nature have made my child feel comfortable trying new techniques and media. As a professional artist herself, she brings valuable real-world experience to her teaching. We're particularly grateful for how she helped select and organize pieces for my child's art portfolio, highlighting her best work while building her confidence.

Very patient and understanding tutor

She was able to show me different techniques that I hadn’t previously considered. She also reminded me to push the values and encouraged me to look at the piece as a whole rather than individual areas

Art Portfolio Lesson

Laura has been great in helping my daughter work on her weak areas of her art portfolio, while still appreciating how creative she is in the other areas of art. She encourages her while teaching her too.

Very patient and knowledgeable

My daughter is taking tutoring with Laura to assist her with basic drawing skills and she has found it to be very valuable. She gives her homework and they review and critique each week. She has been very patient with her and has had great suggestions to enhance her skills.
