I have more than twelve thousand hours of experience teaching the English, Hindi and Urdu languages and am always excited to work with new students. When teaching I always strive to be well-prepared, patient and adaptive to each individual's needs and I am comfortable working with students using both communicative as well as more grammar-based teaching methodologies.

In addition to general language teaching, I also specialize in test preparation classes for the TOEFL, IELTS and OPIc English proficiency tests. I also work with Hindi and Urdu students who are preparing for foreign service exams in the US or abroad.

I earned my TESOL certification from Seattle University in 2008 and am currently working on a Masters in Teaching with an emphasis on English Language Learning (ELL). I think what sets me apart as an English language teacher is the fact that I have become fluent in second languages myself and know what it's like to live in an entirely different culture.

My Hindi and Urdu studies began in 2006 at the University of Washington where I was given a strong foundation in the pronunciation and grammar of the languages. Four intensive quarters of study there was followed by the American Institute of Indian Studies' (AIIS) Advanced Hindi Language Program in Jaipur, India where I did two intensive, advanced-level programs back-to-back. I was then hired by AIIS as the first-ever non-native speaker to teach in their Basic Hindi Program.

In 2009, I cofounded a language school in New Delhi (India), which has become a world class place of language learning. I gained more than 10 thousand hours of in-class language instruction experience there, working with students of all ages and backgrounds from dozens of countries. After living and teaching in India for eight years I returned to Seattle with my wife and son.

I am generally available for classes between 8am - 8pm for in-person or online classes.

Should you have any questions about my experience or approach to teaching, feel free to get in touch anytime!

My knowledge of English grammar (and grammar in general) really developed when I began to study foreign languages. After studying Spanish, German, Sinhala and Sanskrit, I then thoroughly learned Hindi and Urdu and eventually began to teach Hindi, Urdu and English. Through more than 12,000 hours of in-class language teaching experience working with a wide range of students with a wide range of learning materials, my understanding of and ability to explain grammar has improved significantly.

Hindi,

Hindi

I'm passionate about the Hindi language and consider it my number one teaching specialty. While the language is certainly vast and learning it continues for a life time, I feel confident in my ability to teach Hindi up to advanced levels. For beginners, while I always stress the importance of learning the Hindi script, I can also work with students who would rather take a more casual approach. My own Hindi studies began more than a decade ago. I completed Basic and Intermediate Hindi at the University of Washington in Seattle. I then completed two advanced-level Hindi programs at the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS). The following summer AIIS hired me as the first-ever non-native speaker to teach in their Basic Hindi Program, where I co-taught a group of American university students. After co-founding a language school in 2009 in New Delhi, India, I went on to teach a total of around 8 thousand in-class hours of Hindi from the basic to advanced levels. My wife is a native speaker and she and I communicate almost exclusively in Hindi and we are also raising our son bilingually.

Urdu

I began learning to read and write Urdu in 2008 with a private tutor soon after I reached an advanced-level in the Hindi language. In terms of basic grammar and vocabulary, the Urdu language is more or less identical to Hindi. The two languages differ in terms of the writing systems they use and in terms of high register vocabulary. After co-founding a Language Institute in New Delhi, India in 2009, I continued to regularly practice my Urdu reading, writing and speaking skills and then began to teach basic-level Urdu within a few years.

Outstanding Tutor

Christoph is my tutor for the Urdu language. I’ve had A Lot of language instructors over the years, but Christoph is one of the very best. I’m a visual learner, so Christoph’s use of the white board was an enormous aid in my learning. I cannot wait to take more lessons from Christoph! You would be very hard pressed to find a better tutor, so I HIGHLY recommend him!

Simply the best!

My 10-year-old daughter and I are learning "mommy's language" (Urdu) together. Thanks to Christoph's expert tutelage, our knowledge and comprehension has gone from close to zero to a solid grasp of the basics in just a few months. I'm sure at this rate, fluency is not far in the future! We have had a LOT of "why?" questions and have yet to stump Christoph! He always has an answer and is great about breaking things down clearly and patiently until they make sense. I can't recommend him highly enough, especially for native English speakers interested in learning Urdu or Hindi from the ground up.

Very patient, would recommend

Christoph has shared his valuable knowledge in Hindi with me, which has excelled my skills in reading and writing. He is patient with my pace and gives me assignments to work on for our next session to feel prepared. I have already impressed some native speakers from what I have learned from Christoph within a few sessions!

Knowledgeable tutor

Christoph is very thorough with his lessons, he made sure to consult with me along the way to make sure the pace was comfortable yet challenging for me. In just the first lesson he was able to make sense of concepts I was not clear on before. I look forward to working with him more. I also appreciate the detailed notes from the lesson which he sends after class.

Knowledgeable

He is thorough and works with you for an overall understanding rather than absolute perfection as a beginner. Christoph has a good reference for hindi as well as language and keeps checking to see that you are following.

Experienced and professional tutor

Christoph helped me with the preparation for IELTS. He is very easy to work with and provides precise feedback. I had all my session with him online, but the sessions well organized and he provided me with a copy of notes after each session. I was able to review the notes of previous classes, which helped me a lot in identifying recurring errors in my writing. He provided handy tips for avoiding common mistakes. I enjoyed working with him and lot and would recommend him for English lessons.

Excellent Tutor

Christoph is an excellent Hindi tutor. Not only is he a lovely guy and very easy to converse with but he is extremely knowledgeable and well organized. He types notes that I can see while the session is in progress, thus I can see the Hindi sentences that I am verbally creating in the lesson. We can then work on the corrections, further meanings and the process of enlarging vocabulary. The notes are then sent to me for review. This is definitely the best language tutorial I have ever had. Christoph's deep grasp of Hindi combined with his effectiveness as a teacher makes him an excellent choice for people wanting either an intro to the language or a deeper exploration.

Highest quality tutor who adeptly customizes lessons

I have been tutored by Christoph in beginner Hindi for a few months, and I cannot speak highly enough of his teaching capabilities. I had been struggling to pick up Hindi for a few years through osmosis and native speakers in my spouse's family, but it was my decision to work with Christoph that finally gave me real progress in speaking and understanding Hindi. He is very adept at presenting material, always providing the correct level of explanation to make sense to a curious but beginning student. He has also consistently customized his lessons to my personal motivation (to be able to converse with family and friends) to learn Hindi into account with his teaching while making sure that I learn the foundational basics of grammar and writing. His Skype lessons are incredibly effective!
