I have more than twelve thousand hours of experience teaching the English, Hindi and Urdu languages and am always excited to work with new students. When teaching I always strive to be well-prepared, patient and adaptive to each individual's needs and I am comfortable working with students using both communicative as well as more grammar-based teaching methodologies.

In addition to general language teaching, I also specialize in test preparation classes for the TOEFL, IELTS and OPIc English proficiency tests. I also work with Hindi and Urdu students who are preparing for foreign service exams in the US or abroad.

I earned my TESOL certification from Seattle University in 2008 and am currently working on a Masters in Teaching with an emphasis on English Language Learning (ELL). I think what sets me apart as an English language teacher is the fact that I have become fluent in second languages myself and know what it's like to live in an entirely different culture.

My Hindi and Urdu studies began in 2006 at the University of Washington where I was given a strong foundation in the pronunciation and grammar of the languages. Four intensive quarters of study there was followed by the American Institute of Indian Studies' (AIIS) Advanced Hindi Language Program in Jaipur, India where I did two intensive, advanced-level programs back-to-back. I was then hired by AIIS as the first-ever non-native speaker to teach in their Basic Hindi Program.

In 2009, I cofounded a language school in New Delhi (India), which has become a world class place of language learning. I gained more than 10 thousand hours of in-class language instruction experience there, working with students of all ages and backgrounds from dozens of countries. After living and teaching in India for eight years I returned to Seattle with my wife and son.

I am generally available for classes between 8am - 8pm for in-person or online classes.

Should you have any questions about my experience or approach to teaching, feel free to get in touch anytime!

Grammar

My knowledge of grammar really developed when I began to study foreign languages. After studying Spanish, German, Sinhala and Sanskrit, I then thoroughly learned Hindi and Urdu and eventually began to teach Hindi, Urdu and English. Through more than 12,000 hours of in-class language teaching experience working with a wide range of students and with a wide range of learning materials, my own understanding of grammar has deepened as has my ability to teach it.

While teaching full-time at Zabaan Language Institute in New Delhi, India from October 2009 to February 2016, I regularly taught IELTS prep classes through private instruction to students wanting to applying to a university in the UK. I became familiar with the test format and the most popular preparation materials.

Most recently, I've worked with several students who have successfully achieved their target scores on the TOEFL to become professionally certified. I've taught hundreds of TOEFL prep classes in-person and online since 2012 and am very familiar with the test, which parts are the most challenging for students, and with the most effective prep materials available. I take the TOEFL myself to ensure I'm up-to-date on its format and to better empathize with students' experience.

Hindi

I'm passionate about the Hindi language and consider it my number one teaching specialty. While the language is certainly vast and learning it continues for a life time, I feel confident in my ability to teach Hindi up to advanced levels. For beginners, while I always stress the importance of learning the Hindi script, I can also work with students who would rather take a more casual approach. My own Hindi studies began more than a decade ago. I completed Basic and Intermediate Hindi at the University of Washington in Seattle. I then completed two advanced-level Hindi programs at the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS). The following summer AIIS hired me as the first-ever non-native speaker to teach in their Basic Hindi Program, where I co-taught a group of American university students. After co-founding a language school in 2009 in New Delhi, India, I went on to teach a total of around 8 thousand in-class hours of Hindi from the basic to advanced levels. My wife is a native speaker and she and I communicate almost exclusively in Hindi and we are also raising our son bilingually.

The BEST Urdu tutor you will find!

I engaged Christoph for Urdu lessons to pass a placement exam at my university. What I had estimated would take 6 months, he accomplished in 1 month! I passed the placement exam! Firstly, Christoph had a 30 minute introductory lesson with me free of charge where he assessed my speaking and reading level, and gave me the opportunity to see if this was a good fit. I decided to sign up for further lessons with him immediately after. Not only does Christoph have a strong command of the Urdu language, he is also incredibly well-versed in general grammar terminology and usage, which really enriches his teaching style of foreign languages. Christoph was also insanely structured. He had a personalized lesson plan prepared for each class based on my level and goals. I didn't have to worry about supplementing the lessons at all, Christoph did all the heavy lifting for me! Along with the lesson plan, he assigned reading and homework worksheets that really helped me enforce the lesson topics. Again, these worksheets were tailored to me and what I needed practice on. Simply put, Christoph is the best out there. I cannot recommend him enough. Look no further and send him a message TODAY!

Great first lesson

For a non-native speaker, Christoph provides a good introduction to the basics of speaking Urdu. He is open to tailoring the program for our 3 kids which is helpful since they are on different levels and have very different personalities.

Magic

Christoph has a wonderful way of connecting with my son, who has struggled with writing for several years. Not only is he inherently likable and engaging, but Christoph is a deeply experienced educator whose creative solutions tapped ways of working with my child that moved him past his struggles. Highly recommend!

Excellent tutor

Trust me, his experience is going to help you out. It was challenging at the beginning, but things started getting better from the 3rd or 4th class. Everything just went smoothly and naturally. Chris has always been patient to me!

Fantastic Urdu teacher

Learning requires leaning into the zone of proximal development, which varies from student to student, week by week. Christoph was able to find my edge within our first lesson, and challenged me to map sounds to characters and Urdu concepts to existing language frameworks I've developed. I highly recommend Christoph as an Urdu tutor!

Uses different ways of infusing interest in writing

As a parent who had experience with different teachers, I am really impressed that Christoph finds new ways of infusing interest in writing, proposing really fun topics ranging from haiku to writing on a controversial topic to some creative piece. He gently guides and looks for ways to help the child continuously improve. Thank you for being such dedicated teacher!
