Southwestern University (English and Math)
I love teaching. More specifically, I love being part of someone's discovery that math isn't really a foreign language and that writing doesn't have to be a torturous process. I believe that learning should be fun, and enjoy seeing the satisfaction, confidence, and wonder that comes with understanding and success.
As a high school senior, I student taught a sophomore biology class as part of an education course, and assisted with developmentally delayed and ESL courses. At Seattle Central Community College, I was elected by faculty to serve as Lead Tutor for their new Writing Center. When I transferred to Southwestern University, I completed a Teaching of Writing course, and served as the Assistant Director for the Debby Ellis Writing Center, where I was responsible for the orientation and training of new writing center staff. As a Calculus student teacher, I held office hours, graded homework, prepared worksheets, and ran recitations. I also served as a Southwestern University math tutor, and tutored and mentored middle school and high school students (through Operation Achievement and Upward Bound). My passion for learning and communicating about mathematics, literature, and writing earned me departmental awards in both math and English.
I have a lot of experience working with frustrated students, adults returning to school, and English Language Learners. (I was a frustrated student when I first attended college, and then was an adult when I returned.) My goal in a tutoring session is to focus on transferable skills, so that each session not only addresses the assignment at hand but also provides clients with skills, techniques, or tricks they can use in future assignments. For example, we can practice using a reference text or reverse-outlining a paper, so that you leave every session with more tools for independent learning.
I'm happy to do test prep for the following:
SAT: scored 1350 (back when it was out of 1600)
ACT: scored 33
GRE Verbal Reasoning: scored 168 (98th percentile)
GRE Quantitative Reasoning: scored 167 (94th percentile)
Please feel free to email me with any questions. I look forward to creating a personalized lesson plan with you! I love teaching. More specifically, I love being part of someone's discovery that math isn't really a foreign language and that writing doesn't have to be a
Heather is amazing!!! My daughter needed help with her 7th grade Algebra and Heather responded right away. She made room in her schedule for my daughter so that she could understand some concepts she was struggling with. Sage is a bit shy but felt very comfortable around Heather. She learned a lot in an hour and has a good grasp on the concepts she was struggling with in order to complete her homework. We plan on meeting with Heather regularly to help Sage with her struggles.
I am also mentioned to her that I was having some problems with my college course around statistics. She welcomed the opportunity to help me too. In fact, she took the time to consult with me a bit about my issues to get a better understanding of what context I was using statistics to better help me when we meet.
I highly recommend Heather to anyone that needs a bit more help understanding concepts. She is friendly, polite, genuine, and very smart! I can't thank her enough for helping us out on such quick notice!
My daughter has had 3 sessions with Heather for Precalculus and some Physics. We are scheduling her weekly now. She has been such a great help! My daughter likes Heather and really appreciates how clearly she explains complicated subject matter. Heather is great!
Very good first meeting. Heather put my daughter at ease and has an easy manner that is provides a great learning atmosphere.
Heather has helped so much with our daughter's education needs. She is always very attentive and excellent at what she does. Thanks Heather!
She knew how to find the right way to teach my daughter. She took her time to find what she knew and what her problem areas were
Heather is excellent at recognizing your thought process when working on a math problem, and helping you learn a different perspective if needed. She is very patient and encouraging, and just a great tutor!
My daughter has had her first lesson with Heather and was really pleased with her knowledge and ability to make a difficult problem understandable.
Heather is tutoring my daughter to improve her ACT scores. I'm hearing that she is not only knowledgeable about content, but strategy as well. She teaches in a way that is very accessible. So glad we found her!
She is calm and creative, organized and professional and open to trying to figure out what works. The review from my daughter is that "she is understanding and she really listens". We feel glad to have found Heather.
I appreciate how Heather can explain the problems many different way with other types of similar examples. She has a deep grasp of the subject that allows her to communicate and teach from a variety of positions.
Heather and I worked together weekly to help improve my math skills for the SAT. She was very helpful working through problems and explained things in a way that was very easy for me to understand. She was always happy to slow down when I didn't understand a topic or concept. I went into the SAT feeling much more confident in my math skills, and it's all thanks to Heather!
Heather was very knowledgeable about all things beginning math. She explained and illustrated various beginning pre test math formulas and I look forward to learning more with her.
I've been taking Precalculus lessons with Heather, and it's been an awesome experience so far. She's so easy-going, very patient, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her!
Heather is personable and engaging. Thank you for drawing our embarrassed girl out of her shell. Heather is really nice time and her English lesson was beneficial. Thank you!
Heather relates very well to my daughter, a middle-schooler who hates and lacks confidence in math, and creates an environment where she feels comfortable asking questions or admitting that she doesn't understand. The sessions are relaxed and have been very helpful.
Heather is a fantastic, dependable tutor. She prepared individual material for my son. My son responded very well to her organized manner. Each appointment was established, confirmed and she provided me with a summary. She responded quickly. I highly recommend her.
Algebra 2 - various topics. She moved quickly when appropriate but slowed to explain patiently when necessary. We are working towards passing a comprehensive subject test.
We are so happy to have found Heather! She has a great balance of knowing how to explain things and not overwhelm at the same time. We are using her for SAT test prep and pre-cal homework and she's been wonderful. We'll continue to use her as needed!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed Discrete Math as an undergraduate at Southwestern University (with an A). As a Southwestern math tutor, Discrete Math was one of the subjects that I tutored. Much of the content from Discrete Math was reinforced as I progressed through my math degree (particularly combinatorics, algorithms, set theory, logic, mathematical relations, and graph theory), and I have a wonderful textbook on hand for reference. For many of the Discrete Math topics, I make sure students are comfortable using both mathematical symbols and 'plain English' to describe problems and solutions, privileging understanding over memorization.
