I recently received my PhD degree in biology. My tutoring specialty spans across general biology, ecology, calculus, and statistics (high school AP courses, undergraduate, and graduate levels). I have used various statistics & Microsoft Office software extensively and I can provide intermediate coding/statistical analyses assistance, as well as helping students become proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). As an individual who has written multiple scientific reports, I am also proficient with technical scientific writing. I have also taught undergraduate students in general ecology/biology/oceanography courses as a graduate teaching assistant and the experiences have been truly rewarding.

I am truly fascinated with every aspect of science, and would love to share my knowledge and passion with students to help them succeed through their academic career. I understand that biological sciences, math and statistics, while fascinating as they are, can be difficult to understand and maybe even frustrating at times. However, I find that through patience, diligence, and fun examples many students have become increasingly interested in these subjects and succeeded in attaining high exam scores.

In addition, I am happy to help students prepare for SATs in all three sections. I understand that SAT is one of the most important components in college applications and I am here to help you succeed by reaching high or even a perfect score. As a tutor, I am willing to review some of the most difficult questions (across all three sections) that students could expect during their official SAT exam, share strategies & important tips to finish the questions correctly within the time limit, and also to help students structure a study/preparation plan in the preceding months & weeks before their next official exam.

Please email me if you are interested or have any questions. Thank you!

-Completed AP Biology during high school and obtained a high score for the IB Biology Exam -Completed two semesters of general biology as an undergraduate (molecular & cellular biology, botany/ecology/evolution) -Completed two semesters of general Environmental Sciences as an undergraduate -Completed the following courses as an undergraduate: ecosystem ecology, general entomology, energy & resources (two semesters) -Completed the following graduate-level courses: nutrient cycling, environmental assessment & analysis, community ecology, ecosystem restoration, trophic cascades, biological oceanography
Calculus,

Calculus

-Three quarters of Calculus (Grades were A+, A-, and B+ respectively) at University of Oregon. Used James Stewart's textbook "Calculus". -Used calculus extensively in physical oceanography research as a post-baccalaureate student I believe the best way to learn Calculus is by doing as many practice problems. I know from my personal experience that many topics in Calculus (beyond simple derivatives and integrals) can get counter-intuitive and challenging to understand, but with my help, I hope to make it easier for students to absorb difficult topics and be well-prepared for any upcoming exams.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

-Enrolled in two quarters of Precalculus at University of Oregon (received A- and B+) -Used "Contemporary College Algebra: A Graphing Approach" Textbook by Thomas Hungerfold for both quarters -Tutoring methods: from my experience with precalculus, I found that doing as many practice problems was the most effective method to achieve high exam scores. I aim to teach students by assigning a wide range of practice problems, and emphasizing those problems on a concept or a chapter student experiences difficulties in, if necessary.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

-I scored 740 in SAT Math (Scored correct answers for all questions except one). -Tutoring approach: Doing as many practice questions while being timed is the key. While I believe that College Board SAT preparation book is indeed the best study/practice guide for SAT preparation, using practice questions from other sources such as Barron's, Kaplan, and Princeton Review can be extremely helpful, especially if you are struggling to finish all the questions correctly under the time limit. From my personal experience, many SAT Math questions do not require calculators at all; in fact, many questions can be answered with simple tips and tricks instead of long hand-written calculations under time limit. During the first lesson, I plan on assigning a diagnostic math test, and from there, I plan to see which types of questions the student is most struggling with or taking the longest time to solve.

Knowledgeable and patient

This marks the first time anyone has truly gotten through to my son on a level he could understand. He has had consistent issues with the material Timothy reviewed and he finally understands it. Timothy took the time needed and has the patience to facilitate understanding.

Great tutor

Timothy is able to work effectively with my son. It's important to calibrate expectations and lessons especially when working with teenagers. Timothy is very aware of changing circumstances but still maintains high standards

Bindu, 20 lessons with Timothy

Timothy has a comforting style of teaching. He is knowledgeable, patient and reliable.

Tim is helping my daughter in adjusting to her new grueling schedule in AP BIO, PreCal and Writing. I am relieved that my daughter is learning and enjoying these sessions. Tim is very accommodating and is willing to extend his session beyond the allotted slot to make sure that my daughter is up to speed on her work. She is very happy with his style of tutoring and is looking forward to many more sessions!

Excellent Statistics Tutor!

Timothy tutors my son for AP Statistics, he is very knowledgable but also is patient and knows how to teach. He was punctual and flexible in that we needed to change the venue a few different times. I would highly recommend him as a statistics and math tutor.
