About Grace

I am a masters student with a BA in linguistics and a minor in Japanese. In addition, I have earned a TESOL certification (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and I am now working through my MA in the same field. I love helping others and I really enjoy working with other languages. I love showing students that language can be complicated, but that there are also tools to break it down and see how all the pieces work together. I have experience working at City University as well as Kaplan International School. Most of my teaching has been with international students, but I have taught individual immigrant student lessons and online conversation tutoring as well.

I have also worked with higher education bound international students to improve their English test scores as well as their academic English skills. As a former essay rater at the Educational Testing Service, I have also had many opportunities to analyze the writing and reading skills of native English speakers preparing to enter college.

The most satisfying parts of time as a teacher has been when students reach their goals. If my students have a goal for work, school, or just normal life, I always work to find the best way for each student to reach that goal.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have not only studied English during the course of my linguistics BA, but also through my teaching English to speakers of other languages training. This has allowed me to give more or less complex explanations of why certain grammatical and semantic traits work the way they do.

ESL/ESOL

I have a BA in linguistics from Western Washington University. This has given me the opportunity to do a lot of breaking down of languages such as English to analyze and explain how the different parts of that language work. In addition I have studied several languages including Japanese, Spanish and Greek which has allowed me to learn skills in learning other languages.

Really kind and cheerful teacher — Grace is a really nice teacher. She is kind and cheerful, so it was easy to take her lessons. Also, she taught me to match my level for listening. Moreover, she made word lists to memorize vocabulary. I can use this to review for lessons. She is great teacher and I want to learn English from her continuously. ...
