I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Benaroya Research Institute, where I study immunology using bioinformatics. I earned my PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Washington, where I used computational modeling to study protein synthesis in cells. I hold a dual bachelor's degree in Secondary Education and Molecular & Cellular Biology from Vanderbilt University, where I also completed a secondary education program and student-taught middle and high school science classes. In the future, I plan to become a middle/high school or college science teacher.

My passion for math and science began in middle school and grew through my time at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), a STEM-focused boarding school. There, I took advanced courses such as multivariable calculus, molecular biology, stem cell biology, and advanced chemistry, and began tutoring my peers, something I’ve continued ever since!

At Vanderbilt, I took courses in organic/inorganic chemistry, molecular genetics, and cell biology, maintaining a 3.63 GPA. I tutored student athletes at the Stratton Foster Academic Support Center and have since accumulated over 750 hours of tutoring experience through Vanderbilt, WyzAnt, and private clients. I’ve worked with students from elementary school through graduate school in subjects including SAT/ACT math and science, biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, calculus, and more. My standardized test scores include AP Biology (5), AP BC Calculus (5), ACT Math/Science (35), and SAT Math (800).

As someone who has struggled with academic anxiety and fear of asking questions, I prioritize creating a patient, supportive environment where students feel comfortable and empowered to learn. I’m flexible, empathetic, and deeply committed to helping students build confidence and succeed!

Study Skills

I have excellent time management and study skills since I have managed to keep up a variety of activities during my high school career while still maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I played soccer, swam, ran track, played violin, and tutored throughout the school year while still doing well in all of my classes. I perform very well on tests since I know have to study for them effectively. I use whiteboards, note-cards, and study partners all to study effectively.

Ty is very knowledgeable!!

Ty is fantastic! He tutors my daughter in Algebra 2. She says Ty is knowledgeable and guides her through solving problems. I plan on continuing tutoring services with Ty for my daughter. She mentions that he is patient, encouraging and helpful. If you are looking for someone that will take into consideration your child's learning style and level of abilities, you would need to look no further. I highly recommend Ty. Ty's patience, knowledge and effective interaction with the student will deliver results.

Wonderful Tutor

Ty is doing an amazing job as a Pre Calculus tutor. He is very responsive and easy to communicate with. My high school student struggled with this subject and questioned if they should continue with the course. With Ty's help they are making gains and improving with each lesson.

Excellent, Well Prepared, Engaging and Flexible Tutor for AP Biology and Chemistry

Ty B. is an excellent tutor with great qualifications for AP Biology and Chemistry. In session, Ty is well prepared, engaging and gets right into the material. His use of the assigned material is well appreciated. He has quickly established a good repertoire with my son. Ty is also responsive and flexible in scheduling which is great for us. We could not be happier. We highly recommend Ty.

helped with a test review

He helped me understand by having me work problems after explaining concepts. He did a good job of explaining steps necessary. Great teacher!

I would enthusiastically recommend Ty without hesitation!

He has a way of spoon-feeding information to you, testing your knowledge for gaps, and then leading you to answers. Was extremely pleasant to listen to and kept the session at a nice pace. One of the best tutors I have ever seen. Has a great temperament, is patient, social, and adept at identifying and correcting misunderstandings. The only downside to our session was that he did not record our session, which I thought occurs by default unless a person opted out. I also prefer that tutors advise me upfront as to how much time they can spend in a session, but he availed himself to me on short notice, so I can't fault him for not doing so.

My daughter just finished her first session with Ty and it was super helpful and informative! I am planning on scheduling another session ASAP. Thanks Ty!

Getting off to a great start!

"We reviewed how to set up equations from word problems, developing skills to convert word versions of different types of equations into math versions of equations. We then worked on transformations of graphs."

fabulous tutor!

Ty was quick & efficient. My daughter really appreciated his flexibility with timing & also a late tutoring request. Ty explained her Calculus assessment in a way that she could actually understand. Great teacher!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor!

Ty was very knowledgeable and patient. My son is a high school sophomore taking chemistry outside of school. Ty explained the material really clear and my son enjoyed the lesson very much.

Rockstar! Highly recommend!!!

Ty was soooo amazing with my daughter. She’s in 7th grade in an advanced math class and she was struggling a bit, with percentages especially. Ty was very patient with her, helped her understand and she felt so much more confident that she finally understood percentages, only after one session.Ty gave my daughter some problems to work on and send back to him so he could see how she was doing. Gave her feedback where needed. Ty is very patient and extremely flexible. When the kids are already overwhelmed during the week with everything, Ty was available on the weekend to tutor my daughter. Which was very nice. Would highly recommend and we already have our second session set up! Thanks again Ty!
