Hello,

I am a native Japanese speaker who moved from Japan to the United States 20 years ago. For the past 17 years, I have been teaching and tutoring Japanese to both children and adults. Currently, I teach Japanese at a university and a language school.

When working with young children, I speak to them in Japanese as much as possible, using gestures and repeating key words and expressions to support comprehension. With older children and adults, I use English when needed—especially to explain grammar or clarify difficult concepts—but I still aim to communicate primarily in Japanese.

As a tutor, I’ve worked with a wide range of students, each with their own goals. My approach is simple: I do my best to help every student achieve their personal objectives. Their satisfaction is my satisfaction.

I’m also committed to growing as a language educator. In 2019, I earned certification as an AAPPL (ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages) rater and an OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) tester.

In addition to Japanese, I am qualified to teach Russian. Before moving to the U.S., I taught Russian at universities in Japan for three years. Because I learned Russian as a foreign language myself, I’m especially effective at teaching beginners—I can explain grammatical rules in a clear, systematic way. I earned my Ph.D. in Russian language studies from Kyoto University Graduate School in 2005.

Japanese

I have been teaching and tutoring my native language Japanese to adults and children around Seattle for more than 7 years. Currently, I teach and tutor Japanese almost everyday - at a preschool, a university, a public school (after school program), coffee shops, libraries and student's houses. I majored in Russian language and linguistics both in undergraduate and graduate and the knowledge of languages and experiences have been helping me to teach Japanese with confidence.
Russian

Russian

My occupation back in Japan was Russian language teacher at Universities. I started learning Russian at Kyoto Sangyo University when I was 18 years old. After graduation, I entered Kyoto University Graduate School to study Russian language and linguistics more. In 2005, I received a Ph.D degree. Although I am not a native speaker, I speak Russian well, since I studied Russian at a language school and a university in Moscow for about a year and I still use Russian at home every day.

Excellent tutor

Yuko has done a fantastic job both working with me on particular grammar and usage points, and creating a study plan to prepare for taking the JLPT, while making the whole thing into conversation practice

Wonderful starter lesson

Yuko worked so well with our family. We are all already very excited for our future lessons with her! She got our 6 year old excited and feeling confident in learning more! Arigatou gozaimasu Yuko Sensei.

Great teacher - highly recommended!

I've worked with Yuko over the past few months, and I've been extremely happy with the progress I've made in my Japanese ability working with her. She was very patient (which is good, because I make lots of mistakes), and encouraged me to find other ways to explain what I meant when what I said was unclear so that she could suggest more natural ways to express what I was trying to say. This was exactly what I was hoping for when I looked for a Japanese tutor! She was able to assess my ability level quickly and adjusted her teaching method appropriately, so I always felt like lessons were at the right level and I was always learning something new.

Thank you, Brad, for your time to write this great review. I enjoyed working with you a lot. Good luck with your life in Japan and Japanese learning!

Learned a lot and feel much more confident with speaking and listening

I came from a self-study background and had had almost no speaking practice, so in my first lesson with Yuko I could barely utter a complete sentence. I went from that to being able to smoothly carry and have interesting and enjoyable conversations. (Those particles still get me, of course!) Yuko did a great job figuring out where I was speaking, vocab and grammar-wise, and adjusted lessons accordingly.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for the wonderful review! I enjoyed talking with you about various things in Japanese. I am hoping to meet you again for lessons in near future.

Patient and helped me feel confident

Started with the characters and got to numbers. The positive reinforcement was a great help. She gave me homework that would match my amount of free time and help me reach my goal.

Great Teacher! Very knowledgeable.

Yuko was great! We were able to go over a lot and she smoothly broke everything down to make learning Japanese easier. Can’t wait for our next lesson!

Tutor responded:

Thank you, Julianne, for the great review! I have been enjoying working with you and I am looking forward to meeting you for our 3rd lesson in July.

Patient and helpful tutor

After discussing my goals, Yuko understood what I was looking for in a lesson. The last time I studied Japanese was over 35 years ago. Yuko suggested we use a textbook along with our sessions and it has been very helpful in refreshing my memory. With Yuko's help, I am looking forward to improving my Japanese listening and speaking skills. I am looking forward to our next session.

Jane, 3 lessons with Yuko
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Jane, for finding time to write the review. I am glad to hear that you like the textbook we decided to use. I am looking forward to meeting you for our 4th lesson next week.

Immersive Japanese teaching I can understand

Yuko is very nice and easy to talk to. Something I like most about her classes is that she would talk to mostly in Japanese the entire time. This gave me lots of good conversation practice, and when we come to something I don’t know or understand she will explain it to me. She is very adaptable and will change her teaching style to fit your needs. Tutoring with Yuko is a great experience. After every class I feel like I am improving.

Jennifer, 9 lessons with Yuko
Tutor responded:

Thank you very much for the great review! Yes, you ARE improving and I think it is mostly because you study hard between our lessons. It has been a pleasure to help you. I look forward to meeting you next week for the next lesson.
