Hi! My name is Austin. I'm a math professor at Seattle University, having taught subjects including college algebra, pre-calculus for business, calculus-based probability and statistics, and advanced calculus (differential equations - Calc IV). I've been tutoring for longer than that though, with hundreds of hours of one-on-one instruction with students since 2008, focusing on math, science, ACT/SAT prep, and a variety of other subjects. Teaching math at the university level since the pandemic, I've realized that now more than ever, there's a need for that one-on-one focus with students to help strengthen understanding of difficult but foundational academic material.

I love helping students break through their confusion and frustration, fostering a deep understanding and ability to independently answer questions and solve problems. My approach emphasizes meeting students where they're at, and gradually helping them become comfortable and confident with the subject material.

I graduated with a master's degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Washington in 2023, with my research focused on climate science. Before that, I graduated with honors in Applied Mathematics from Brigham Young University, where my research with the biochemistry department was focused on studying the molecular processes underlying neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's. I currently work full-time as a research data specialist at a global health institute affiliated with the School of Medicine at the University of Washington.

English grammar is one of my strongest skills. I've read my copy of The Elements of Style multiple times, and I feel confident in my knowledge of English standard syntactical structures. I got a 35 on the English section of the ACT, and I'm acquainted with the quirks of the ACT English system. I'm confident in my ability to help a student improve their performance on the English section of the ACT.
ACT Math

ACT Math

Math was always my favorite subject in school; I love it! That was my primary motivation for pursuing a Computer Science major and Mathematics minor at BYU. My ACT score on the Math section was a 36. Math is probably my favorite subject to tutor, and I would be happy to help anyone who needs it to improve their understanding of ACT Math.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

For as long as I can remember, I have been an avid reader. I've never had any trouble with reading comprehension, and in multiple instances, I've helped others to understand what they were reading. My score on ACT Reading was a 35, and I've only done more reading since then! I would be more than happy to help anyone who needs some assistance in understanding the Reading section of the ACT.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I've always enjoyed science, which is why I chose the Computer Science major (emphasis Bioinformatics) at BYU. I have a good collegiate-level understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics, and I am experienced in reading the kind of information given in those fields. My score on the ACT Science section was a 34. I think the Science section can be tough, but it's definitely manageable after you figure out some of the idiosyncrasies present in the ACT system, and I would be happy to help anyone to figure it out for themselves.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Math is probably my favorite subject, and I love helping people to understand it. I know math up to a college calculus level, and intend to learn more as I further pursue my Computer Science major and Mathematics minor. I've tutored many people in math before, and I feel confident in my ability to teach it to any willing student.
Algebra 2

I've tutored many people in math before, and I feel confident in my ability to teach it to any willing student.
Biology

Biology

My undergraduate degree is in applied mathematics, with a concentration in biology; the undergraduate research for my thesis was with the biochemistry department, studying the molecular processes underlying neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's. In high school, I obtained the maximum score (5 out of 5) on the AP Biology exam, and also passed IB Biology HL. My current full-time research is under the medical school at the University of Washington, studying epidemiology and global public health. Happy to leverage this background to support students with any biology studies I can help with!
C++

C++

I've been working in C++ since high school; it was the first programming language I learned. It's also been the language of the majority of my Computer Science major courses, along with C. I've tutored for some of the entry-level CS classes, and I would love to help introduce anyone interested to C++ programming.
Calculus

Calculus

I have an undergraduate and master's degree in applied mathematics. I have taught multiple semesters of calculus at Seattle University. I have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring calculus.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I started computer programming in high school, and I've only added to those skills in college in pursuit of a Computer Science major. I've worked as a PHP web developer for most of my time at college, where I've learned even more programming techniques. I've volunteer tutored for entry-level programming courses, and I'd love to help anyone interested to cultivate programming skills. I know a few web programming languages, a well as C++ and some Java.
Computer Science

Computer Science

During high school, I began to develop an interest in computer science, and as I probed deeper into the field, I found it to be a good match for me. Since then, I've learned a lot about programming, as well as the basic functionality of computers, in high school computer classes and in my Computer Science major at BYU. I've tutored for some of these classes, and I have enjoyed doing so. I hope to be able to help others understand computer science, as I find it so fascinating a field.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Although my background is largely in high school- and university-level instruction, I also have experience offering instructional support to students at the middle school, elementary school, and even K/pre-K level. I've helped with math, science, and English (including ESL). Happy to help young students explore and expand their understanding of foundational academic material!
English

English

My knowledge of English is deep and broad. My vocabulary is extensive, my knowledge of grammar is strong, and my feel for style is relatively keen. I am happy to teach any area in English; although it isn't a specific focus of my college education, I feel ready and qualified to teach it.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I gained experience teaching English as a second language from my time as an LDS missionary in Japan, where we taught a weekly volunteer English class, along with other English-teaching volunteer work. Through teaching native speakers of such a different language, I was able to see my own language from a different perspective, and began to really get a feel for how to teach ESL students in an understandable way. I love helping people improve their confidence in speaking correct, comprehensible English.
Finite Math

Finite Math

I have taken various courses in discrete and finite math, from both math and computer science departments, over the course of my undergraduate and master's degrees in applied math. I've also taken probability and statistics courses with relevant content, and taught a probability and statistics course that included many concepts from finite math. Happy to help you understand this type of material if you could use some help with it!

Very nice to work with!!!

Austin was awesome to work with. I hired him to help my 14 year old with substitutions. He has a great balance between work and humor. My daughter took to him right away and in an hour she was gained the understanding she needed to feel confident with that math concept. Thanks Austin :)
