My name is Claire (she/her). I have a Master’s In Teaching for Secondary Education from UW and am also a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescence English/Language Arts. I began my education career in 2006, teaching middle school reading intervention, language arts, and social studies in the Mukilteo and Seattle Public school districts. In 2019, my family and I moved to Vietnam. There, I was a middle school Teacher-Librarian. I continued this work when we returned to Seattle. Most recently, I worked at Hamlin Robinson School and am also a parent of a child with dyslexia, which has made me even more passionate about understanding effective literacy intervention approaches and highlighted the importance of explicit instruction in the development of foundational skills.
I am trained in The Writing Revolution, otherwise known as the Hochman method, and agree with their assertion that writing is how we solidify learning. In addition to explicit, effective writing instruction, one of my special skills is matching students with engaging books they can successfully read and even enjoy! I love helping students grow their skills and better understand themselves as learners and people in the process. Seeing students grow over time and notice their own skill development is what I love most about being an educator. Most of my experience involves working with middle schoolers and I am happy to support upper elementary learners and high school students, too.
An avid reader, I also love to sew, row, ski, backpack, travel, and spend time with family. I look forward to helping your student build their literacy skills.
