Hi, I'm Jesse. I graduated magna cum laude with double major in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Puget Sound, where I also spent a semester studying at Budapest Semesters in Mathematics, graduating with honors. My undergraduate studies included Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra, and I went on to take graduate coursework in logic and set theory at the University of Amsterdam. I've also worked as a software engineer for several years since graduating, so I can bring a practical perspective to topics like discrete math, algorithms, and programming.
I have over two years of tutoring and teaching experience at my university. I served as a department tutor for Math and Computer Science, providing weekly peer tutoring to students across all class levels, from introductory programming through upper-division courses. I was also a teaching assistant for Formal Logic, where I graded assignments and ran dedicated tutoring sessions twice a week throughout the semester. Both roles involved a mix of helping students one-on-one and in small groups, and a mix of math/CS majors and non-majors. I helped with everything from basic concepts to more challenging proofs and problem sets.
I'm happy to work with students at any level from precalculus through upper-division proof-based courses. I don't believe math ability is something you're born with or without. One of the things I find most interesting about math is that almost any concept can be understood through multiple perspectives. Two students can struggle with the same topic for completely different reasons, and the explanation that works for one might not work for the other. I focus on finding the perspective that makes a topic feel intuitive to you, rather than asking you to just memorize the steps and move on.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
I am half Japanese and can communicate with Japanese-speaking parents, though tutoring sessions would be in English.
