Hello! My name is Jake, and I am a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Materials Engineering. My work has provided me a strong foundation in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, including extensive experience with algebra, calculus, and applied problem solving. Because engineering relies so heavily on mathematical reasoning, I have spent years using math, chemistry, and physics not just as a classroom subject, but as a practical tool for understanding real-world systems.
My tutoring style is patient, clear, and focused on understanding rather than memorization. When a student is stuck, I like to slow the problem down, ask guiding questions, and help them see why each step makes sense. I aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and developing the confidence to solve problems independently.
Throughout my undergraduate degree, I enjoyed helping classmates and study groups work through challenging STEM material. I have about three years of small-group teaching and peer-support experience, where I helped students break down difficult concepts, identify mistakes, and build confidence through step-by-step problem solving. I especially enjoy working with students on foundational math skills because a strong understanding of algebra makes later subjects like geometry, trigonometry, chemistry, physics, and calculus much more approachable.
